He studied with his father, the village organist and schoolmaster and then pursued theological training. In 1701 he entered the University of Würzburg to study theology, and in 1704 became a schoolmaster and organist at the Juliusspital in Würzburg. He went to the Benedictine abbey of Banz early in 1707 as chamber musician and servant to the abbot, and by the end of the year had become a novice. Following his ordination in 1711, he served as choirmaster in Banz for the rest of his life. In 1721 the Augsburg firm of Lotter issued the first of his many publications, a volume of masses. Eight years later, when he had established a considerable reputation as a composer of church music, he sought permission to leave Banz for a European tour; he was refused and left without it. He visited Würzburg, Augsburg, Bonn, Cologne, Trier and Benedictine houses in Swabia and around Lake Constance. One of his reasons for making this tour seems to have been to gather information about performance conditions and liturgical customs in the Catholic areas of Germany. As a musician, he was particularly known as a composer of sacred music, which included many Latin mass settings, Vesper psalms, offertories, and other works (20 vols., Augsburg, 1721-39). Among his other works were 24 concerti grossi (1728) and various keyboard pieces (1743). He also edited and arranged the well-known collection of popular song settings 'Ohrenvergnugendes und Gemüth-ergötzendes Tafel-Confect' (3 vols., 1733, 1737, 1746).

Vivante 2. Esprits follets 6. Barcarolle Gabriel Merrill-Steskal, piano Michigan Recording Project Charles-Valentin Alkan (1813-1888) was a French pianist and composer with an eccentric personality and unusual life. He and Liszt met when they were young, and his playing made an impression on Liszt, who later said that Alkan had the greatest technique he had ever known. When Chopin died, he bequeathed his unfinished piano method to Alkan (Ronald Smith, Alkan: The Man, The Music). These pieces are selections from the third book of Chants (songs), Op. 65. There are five books in total, each with six pieces, and their publication spans 15 years. Like most of Alkan’s music, these pieces are at the same time conservative and forward looking. He follows the same key scheme from Mendelssohn’s first set of songs without words in each book of Chants. The first piece, marked 'vivante', has a pianistic texture and a lyrical melody, with smooth modulations to far-off keys. Ronald Smith, the man who wrote the book on Alkan and has recorded much of his music, describes the second piece of this set as a “sort of supersonic Mendelssohn scherzo” (Smith vol. II, 59). Its title translates to “Goblins,” and it starts ppp and is marked prestissimo. The final piece in the suite is the most played of the group, and his most well-known Barcarolle. It is charming, with a certain aimless and wandering quality, with poignant modal inflections. Ronald Smith described it as “the piece of Mendelssohn that Gershwin forgot to write” (Smith vol. II, 61).
