Oh, and one other thing: Forbidden West, in particular, is unapologetically queer, with (what I think) is some phenomenal representation of both queer and neurodivergent individuals. It is also (like Zero Dawn) staunchly anti-capitalist (as in laissez-faire, free-market, “caveat emptor” capitalism) and anti-billionaire, something I absolutely would not expect from a AAA title bankrolled by Sony. #horizonzerodawn #HorizonForbiddenWest

I know I sound like a broken record sometimes, but the backstory of the Horizon games are shockingly, terrifyingly believable (despite the sci-fi embellishments necessary for the story) and have only gotten more so over the years.

The only truly unbelievable part to me is that humanity managed to “claw back” from climate change before accidentally destroying the world.

I also think it’s neat that for Forbidden West they said “hey, Uncharted has a lot of parkour, and Breath of the Wild has hang gliding, we should add those” and both were extremely good ideas that were well-integrated and don’t feel tacked on

I mean obviously Sony threw an absolutely massive amount of money at these games so they could do stuff like that… but I also get the feeling that everyone involved was truly proud of what they were making. To me that distinguishes good art from profit-seeking slop. #HorizonForbiddenWest

So I’ve been replaying the Horizon games, and it’s a shame that many people have slept on them because the gameplay can sometimes be a collect-o-thon. The combat is fantastic (and greatly improved in Forbidden West), but it’s the characters, setting, story, and performances that blow me away. The motion capture is so good in FW that you can see every subtle facial and body expression in the actors’ delivery and it adds a ton to the atmosphere.

So, I /was/ excited to play as my next major open-world game.

But now I'm thinking I should pad things out with some other genres/games for a bit; I'm just coming off of the Fallout TV show earlier this year, and then the Silo TV show/books now.

A third post-apocalyptic setting in a row with the same rough background plot strokes (happy to spoiler-reply if you don't get what I mean here) seems like A Bit Much 😅
