I didn't get to meet Sofia Gubaidulina and hearing her music in New York was a very rare treat (though, gratefully, her Viola Concerto played at the New York Philharmonic last May) -- but her score to the Soviet animated series "Mowgli" (a.k.a. "The Jungle Book") is one of the most in-your-face modernist scores that'll stick in your memory for a lifetime --> youtube.com/watch?v=Tybu1Ni5jz

(I can't find a subtitled version, maybe you can.)

Rest in Peace

There is a hilarious hidden musical joke in the final episode of Cobra Kai. Film composer William Conti did the music for the Karate Kid movies and the Rocky movies.

He originally wrote the song “You’re the best around” for Rocky III, which makes sense considering that the lyrics are about making a comeback. The song was then cut and was replaced with Eye of the Tiger by Survivor.

Conti decided to recycle the song in the Karate Kid tournament montage even if the lyrics didn’t really make sense and became an iconic song from that movie.

Now, in the final season of Cobra Kai, Daniel and Johny train together for the final battle and the training montage is imitating the visuals Rocky III (as well as Rocky montages in general while using the original song :P

MFSB. Is It Something I Said?

This funky instrumental by MFSB sounds like it should belong on a blaxploitation soundtrack, but (as far as I'm aware has never featured on any movie); combining a filmic chorus with funky verses (and a chanted vocal), the 12" mix swirls around you, offering a 70s movie soundtrack experience, with a nod to Norman Whitfield productions via Philly soul. A great sound!

We’ve got some GREAT news! Sword and Fiddle Productions recently signed an agreement with fantastic Exeter-based singer-songwriter duo Sound of the Sirens to use “The Part Where You’re Gone,” one of the tracks from their 2025-released album “The Other Me,” as the backing music to “Booted,” a short film shot in mid-2024 that we have in post-production now and has been crying out for music to go with the footage.

The song itself is a perfect fit for the film (if you’ve been involved and listen to the album, you’ll hear it immediately) and having linked up with Abbe and Hannah, there seems to be a commonality of attitude and purpose that we’re excited to explore further.

For now, check the links if you’d like to find out more about them (and buy their new album!)
