I enjoy looking at ex-voto plaques, which are offerings made to a saint in fulfillment of a vow. Older examples often depict people suffering from illness, while those from around 1950 surprisingly often depict car accidents. The pictured plaque is particularly interesting, as it gives thanks for a building that was spared during a city bombing: '1814 EX VOTO Thanks to the intercession of Maria of #Einsiedeln, our house was luckily saved from those cannonballs.' #painting #exvoto #art

The painting depicts a couple and a child on their knees, praying towards a three-story building. Above the building, flaming cannonballs are visible. Above the family, the Black Madonna of Einsiedeln is shown floating in the sky. The painting was commissioned by Joseph Herb from Schletstadt im Unterelsass, a city now called Sélestat in France. The bombing likely refers to the siege by Bavarian troops in 1814, during which the city did not fall, although it suffered several hundred deaths and an epidemic of typhus.

Demo gegen Alice Weidel in #Einsiedeln

Am Samstag 22.02. haben über 250 Menschen in Einsiedeln gegen Alice #Weidel und ihre rechtsextreme #AFD demonstriert. Es wurden Schilder mit "Menschenrechte statt rechte Menschen", "Kekse statt Nazis", "ekelhAFD" und viele mehr mitgetragen. Die Stimmung war friedlich. Aufgrund der Stimmungsmache im Vorfeld und dem schönen Wetter waren einige rechtsextreme Gegendemonstranten und viele Schaulustige anwesend. Es gab Flaschenwürfe und Provokationen.

Schön zu sehen, dass sich im reaktionären Kanton Schwyz liegenden, etwa 16'500 Einwohner*innen zählenden Wallfahrtsort Einsiedeln, wo Alice Weidel mit ihrer Regenbogenfamilie lebt, doch noch so etwas wie Widerstand gegen keine Alternative für Deutschland und Nazis regt.

Natürlich sind auch Gegendemonstrierende nicht weit, die Beschimpfungen austeilen und Schweizerfahnen schwenken, obwohl eine Gegen-Demo untersagt wurde!
