Student just recommended this to me: ‘Don’t Say It’s Going to Be Okay’: How International Educators Embrace Transformative Education to Support Their Students Navigating Our Global Climate Emergency

MDPI‘Don’t Say It’s Going to Be Okay’: How International Educators Embrace Transformative Education to Support Their Students Navigating Our Global Climate EmergencyMany education professionals are looking to Environmental and Sustainability Education as a guide to incorporate curricular lessons and activities into school classrooms and other learning environments. Building upon the framework of Jickling and Wals (2008) of identifying how to teach about environmental education in transformative ways, this study examined how the experiences and perspectives of seven faculty and staff members at a K-12 International Baccalaureate school in Singapore impacted how they taught about sustainability issues. It also investigated how they work to empower students to become change agents by employing concepts and strategies such as hands-on learning, systems thinking, and service learning. Qualitative interview data revealed four overarching key themes: (1) importance of local context (both the school and the broader socio-political context), (2) pedagogy in relation to student psychology, (3) teacher and staff views on effective pedagogy for teaching about climate crises, and (4) mental health, as experienced by both students and their educators. Teachers and their students regularly struggled with tensions of authority (e.g., school/government, parent/child, teacher/student) and outlook (e.g., “doomism”/hope, empowered/disempowered). Nonetheless, they expressed a variety of thoughtful ways to cultivate their students’ lifelong advocacy for the environment and other related social justice issues.

SpringerLinkSpezifizierung des COACTIV-Modells der professionellen Handlungskompetenz von Lehrkräften für den Bereich Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung - Zeitschrift für ErziehungswissenschaftThe goal of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is to empower learners to participate in mastering the current challenges of global society. This study investigates what professional competences teachers need to have in order to implement high-quality ESD in school. To this end, the COACTIV model of teacher professional competence (Baumert und Kunter 2011) was specified for the field of ESD using qualitative data from 20 interviews with ESD researchers and teachers. The results of the study show that the COACTIV competence dimensions (professional knowledge, beliefs, motivation, self-regulation) can be applied to ESD. The data also show that some components of the model should be further differentiated and defined more specifically in terms of ESD: For example, the interdisciplinarity of the ESD-related contents is a central aspect of ESD, which is mirrored in the ESD-specific model component of pedagogical content knowledge regarding interdisciplinary teaching.

For people waiting on #ESD #unemployment claims in #Washington and can't get through on the phone, you can go to ESD headquarters in Olympia. There is a phone on the desk you can use which gives you a *direct* line to the claims center. You won't be on hold more than 10 minutes.

Better service than I ever got from a Worksource who can't do anything for you it seems.

If you need answers and you're desperate, this can be a viable option.

👁️‍🗨️ I work as a social media manager for a company in #SustainabilityEducation #ESD since March 2022. Back then I considered myself well-informed about #ClimateChange — I read the news, from several reliable sources, daily. However, after 18 months of researching for the content I post, this article speaks for me. ⬇️ [1/2]

I need to safely store passive/active electronic components, & populated circuit boards that need antistatic protection. I plan on using some plastic toolboxes that I have already that have within them plastic boxes I can use for storage. Hence the need for ESD protection.
Choices online for foam are either “antistatic” or “conductive”, are they the same thing?
I’d rather use foam for actives as it is easier to see what’s in the boxes, & just use labelled bags for the boards.

My first ever international key note speech will be tomorrow morning at 4.20 Finnish time / 11.20 Korean time! I will be talking online, and the actual speech is recorded - but I will be waking up and join the live conversation at 4.45. I do not expect any friends or colleagues in Finland to watch, but if someone closer to Korean time zone is interested, please feel free to watch the YouTube stream: youtube.com/live/kElEYlBIKrE?f There are many other interesting presentations in the program as well.

P.S. I did not claim to be a professor - on the contrary, I quite clearly wrote on my bio that I am a university lecturer. 😆

When I was growing up in the midwest, we lived in a 100 year old farmhouse. We had a sizeable Sears & Roebuck humidifier (large basin, belt, fan, etc.) One of my chores was to fill it up when it ran dry in winter.

Now forty years later, working as a #ee in the midwest, we've finally gotten some humidifiers to make a stab at getting the indoor humidity where it's safe for electronics. And periodically it's a chore to fill up the humidifiers when they run dry.

What's really strange is how natural it felt, despite the time gap! 😆

#Intro: I am an enthusiastic #environmentaleducation expert and researcher from Finland trying to find a new social media home after Twitter. I work as a university lecturer at Tampere University. My professional and #Research interests include #ClimateEducation, #Climate, #BiodiversityEducation, #Biodiversity, #Sustainability, and #ESD. My private interests move around #Scouts, #Nature, and #Books, especially children's literature. I am hoping to find a community here!
