MylesRydenIf I were in charge of a progressive education group, I would sue elite colleges for using unadjusted grades as an admission standard.Getting high grades at a rich suburban school is not necessarily reflective of a student's potential. A couple of examples. If teachers set some level, say 92% score on tests as the criteria for an "A" literally everyone in the class could get an A in the class. Yes, "but they worked hard and learned all that stuff" you say. But we don't know that. The grade could reflect a series of easy multiple choice tests. High grades could also reflect the parents influence much more than the student's potential. It is becoming well know that "grade inflation" is much more prevalent in wealthier schools as teachers and administrators are afraid of running afoul of parents.It does not take much thought to see that kids who get high grades in poorer school districts are actually working very hard. They are potentially overcoming many disadvantages built into the system.Grades not adjusted for the poverty level of schools is unfair. Determining rich vs poor school districts is easy-- the percentage of students who receive free school lunches. MylesRydenIf I were in charge of a progressive education group, I would sue elite colleges using SAT/ACT scores as a major part of their admission criteria.These tests were originally designed to provide some kind of correction to "unreliable" grading in high schools. It was thought that the tests would be an "objective correction" for grades being handed like candy. Further it was thought that the tests tapped into some kind of "innate ability" and that scores could not be improved through coaching.Science has shown us that those assumptions are bogus. Test scores do not correlate with long term college success very well, actually high school grades correlate much better with college grades than test scores. If race is not a legitimate selection criteria, how in the world is where the student's parents went to college relevant?The nice part is that losing might even possibly be better than winning. If something about the parents (where they went to college) is relevant, that means that, logically, other parental factors could also be relevant.Like whether the parents speak a foreign language. Whether the parents DIDN'T go to college. Parents below a certain income level.
