Lets face it, if Trump was really interested in understanding why US car manufacturers don't do well in export markets he might compare the size of the favoured vehicles in the US (massive pick-up trucks & SUVs), with the size of streets/roads in Europe & elsewhere.

Having once seen a Hummer trying to navigate the streets of Rome, its no surprise to me few people want big US vehicles....

Of course, he might then argue that Europe's of Asia'a roads are a Non-Tariff Barrier....

Tesla odometer uses “predictive algorithms” to void warranty, lawsuit claims

Hinton's lawsuit alleges that Tesla "employs an odometer system that utilizes predictive algorithms, energy consumption metrics, and driver behavior multipliers that manipulate and misrepresent the actual mileage traveled by Tesla Vehicles" and that his car "consistently exhibited accelerated mileage accumulations of varying percentages ranging from 15 percent to 117 percent higher than plaintiff's other vehicles and his driving history."

Recent reading: THE DRIVING MACHINE: A DESIGN HISTORY OF THE CAR, by Witold Rybczynski.

This slim (213-page) book looks at the history of automobile design.

There are chapters on the early decades from the 1880s to the 1910s, European manufacturers such as Volkswagen and Citroën and their post-WW2 engineering austerity, the American history of mass production, functionally-focused cars such as Jeeps and station wagons (even golf carts!), cars that flopped like the Edsel or Preston Tucker's Car of Tomorrow, and the modern shift to electric cars.

Rybczynski uses his own history of cars to start each chapter, beginning with Volkswagens rented on student trips and ending with the Mercedes he drove for two decades. Many of these stories involve his wife Shirley; the acknowledgments saddened me when they began with a dedication to "my late wife Shirley", and he adds "This is my first book that does not benefit from her keen editor's eye."

It's a fairly dry history, with lots of detail, and just a scattering of interesting trivia and only the closing chapters try to draw any conclusions about how car design has evolved. Despite that, and even though I'm not actually much of a car person, it did keep me reading.

El fondo es de color naranja con la palabra "TOYOTA" repetida en un patrón sutil. En la parte inferior se lee la frase en español: 'Para novedad, Lo Clásico'

If the insurance run around weren't bad enough, I just found out that if the guys insurance pays out a settlement beyond basic medical costs due to owing child-support I would never see any settlement cash.

Unclear what happens to the value of the vehicle, but thankfully the car was still in a family friends name and hadn't been transfer to my partner and I yet. So hopefully I don't need to get a family lawyer for that part.

Tesla (TSLA) has to replace computer in ~4 million cars or compensate their owners

Tesla (TSLA) has to replace the ‘self-driving’ computer inside about 4 million vehicles or likely compensate the owners of those vehicles.

The liability could be more significant than the largest automotive recall in terms of cost.

A few years ago I taught a friend’s kid how to drive a manual transmission. Had a WRX and a 92 Miata at the time so he got to drive both of them.
Today I got a text from him letting me know he’s buying his first car with a manual. It’s an Impreza.
I’m so proud right now.

_The Evening Post_, 17 April 1925:
UNDER A LUCKY STAR
Some people are born under a lucky star. The express which left #Invercargill at 6.10 a.m. on Tuesday had a large complement of passengers, and the abrupt pulling up of the train at Mill road crossing, a short distance out of Invercargill, caused some consternation, states the “Otago Daily Times.” Windows were thrown up, and the passengers noticed in the dusk a bulky shape alongside the engine. A crowd soon gathered, and was much astonished to see a man arise from a motor-car and step on to the railway track, unhurt. Inquiries elicited the information that he had pulled up across the track earlier in the morning, and had gone to sleep. The impact of the train against his car made him realise that his place of rest was scarcely the most suitable. As the engine was jammed into the body of the motor-car, with the cow-catcher resting on the running board, it was found necessary to back the train. The car, which had been carried about 25 yards along the track, was then pushed to safety by a number of the passengers, and seemed little the worse for the collision. The train was able to proceed on its way after a delay of about 15 minutes
