'In Dei Gratia Pty Ltd v Commissioner of Patents [2024] FCA 1145 (Dei Gratia), the Federal Court of Australia dismissed an appeal by Dei Gratia and confirmed the decision of the Commissioner of Patents to refuse the patent application for ‘last mile logistics’. The claimed invention purported to facilitate the delivery of goods from the last point in a distribution chain to end consumers. By selecting a preferred local outlet, customers would be able to overcome delivery issues such as the need to be at home at a specific time and the protection of perishable goods that have been left at doors in high temperatures.

The decision shed light on the difference between an invention that aims to advance computer technologies and new business and logistic methods. To be patentable, the invention must be a “manner of new manufacture.” In other words, it “must be more than an abstract idea; it must involve the creation of an artificial state of affairs where the computer is integral to the invention, rather than a mere tool in which the invention is performed.”' iplawwatch.com/2025/03/31/last #patent #businessmethods #auslaw Decision: Dei Gratia Pty Ltd v Commissioner of Patents [2024] FCA 1145 (1 October 2024) austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/viewdoc

'New smoking laws requiring tobacco companies to print health warnings on every single cigarette they produce for sale in Australia have come into effect.

Today's changes also mean there will be updated health warnings printed on cigarette packets, which will also have inserts with information about how to quit smoking. And a phased ban on menthol cigarettes will also kick in today.' abc.net.au/news/2025-04-01/men #tobacco #smoking #healthwarnings #auspol #auslaw

'The federal government will ban non-compete clauses for most employees, including hairdressers, construction workers and childcare centre staff, according to changes announced in the budget that could help households boost their income.

The policy, designed to come into effect from 2027, would apply to workers earning less than the high-income threshold, currently $175,000 a year.

More than 3 million workers are covered by such clauses, according to the government.' theguardian.com/australia-news #auspol #auslaw #IP #employment #competition

Yeah, okay,
The more I dig into this and remind myself of the relevant laws and treaties, the dumber it feels.

I hope this kid’s lawyer is very savvy in International Law, Criminal Law and Science. Cause it’s not adding up at all.

Reminder that the intent of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) is to “prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and to further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament and general and complete disarmament.”

How on earth is a periodic table collectors item considered the “spread of spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology”

Period Table elements collecting is a thing.

It’s promoted on several US-based website.

It’s admittedly very cool, fascinating, pretty and very very tempting. So I’m going to stop looking up websites.

And I definitely would have considered doing it myself, if I didn’t know any better (and I didn’t know until today).

An Australian super fund has been hit with a $10.5 million penalty for greenwashing.

The Federal Court found Active Super, formerly known as Local Government Superannuation Scheme, misled members and potential members by saying it had eradicated investments in gambling, coal mining and oil tar sands.

The fund also claimed to have eliminated Russian investments following the country's invasion of Ukraine.
