In 1987 there was a (very) limited release of an arcade cabinet called "Moonquake," I have just discovered. Within, was a rather novel hardware arrangement.

This was internally an Amiga 500 with an Ensoniq 5503 DOC (the sound synth chip in the Apple IIgs and Mirage synthesizers) interfaced to it for audio. On the Apple IIgs, the DOC had one 64K sound bank. The chip supported two such banks, but the 5503 in Moonquake apparently had 512K of sound RAM -- each oscillator (or channel (sorta)) had its own 64K of RAM to pull from.

Thanks for the info on this, Ians Schmidt and Brumby from the Apple II slack.

This unique system is supported under MAME.

This past weekend, we stopped at a tiny arcade at the hotel I stayed at with the family. They have one of the two greatest arcade games of all time - Ms. Pac-Man and Mortal Kombat II.

Don't argue with me...that's totally a fact.

Regardless, as the main screens cycled through I took this picture. There was a screen that showed up with details on how to order the soundtrack as well as two different Mortal Kombat comic books back when this dropped in 1993.

I wonder...do you think that's still valid? And if not, do you think there's folks out there who still have copies of these comics / the CD? Cause...I kind of want them.

Also, who stood around in an arcade in 1993 with a pen and paper to write down all this information? Cause I want to meet those people too...

...And borrow the soundtrack from them.

Every night the game god comes to life. The screen glows, there is music. You cannot read the screen, or understand the labels. The controls do nothing.

And yet, there it is. An echo, a shadow of the things of man.

You have seen many such things on your travels. Streetlights that are trees, buildings with no doors, unreadable signposts in the middle of a forest. Even, once, something that looked almost human - it had no hands or legs, just a suggestion of where they might be, like an unfinished sculpture. But the eyes blinked, and followed you as you moved.

You make your way to a clearing, and whistle. There is a great rushing of wings, and your companion lands next to you.

"It looked like an arcade cabinet."

The great predator's head cocks to one side a little, and then gives you a small nudge. Time to fly. You climb onto its back, and launch into the air.
