Attractive Nuisance<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://tech.lgbt/@lumisnow" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>lumisnow</span></a></span> In theory the <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/ATprotocol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ATprotocol</span></a> behind <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Bluesky" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bluesky</span></a> can federate. In practice, there are still missing components and you can't just spin up your own stack completely independent of Bluesky and have them talk. That's "planned for the future".</p><p>The other concern is that the hardware requirements for running your own server are <em>huge</em> compared to Fedi, and likely to increase as Bluesky gets more popular. Which puts running your own server out of the reach of most people, particularly the kind of hobbyists using a Raspberry Pi or similar to run a Mastodon instance.</p>
