#Briar is in public beta!
Briar is a messaging app designed for activists, journalists, and anyone else who needs a safe, easy and robust way to communicate. Unlike traditional messaging apps, Briar doesn't rely on a central server - messages are synchronized directly between the users' devices. If the internet's down, Briar can sync via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. If the internet's up, Briar can sync via the Tor network.
Ultimately Mastodon's killer feature is that it's a public good that someone built because they thought it needed to exist and not a startup someone built because they wanted to get rich quick selling other people's data.

Dear Mastodonians: in case you missed it, Matrix has hit a major bump in funding and we're asking for folks to support us via Patreon/Liberapay. If you believe in a world of decentralised real-time messaging/VoIP/VR/etc, then now would be an *amazing* time to help out!!
Where Despots Rule
AN INTERVIEW WITH ELIZABETH S. ANDERSON
Want to make a huge contribution to Mastodon adoption?
Create and maintain a Debian package for Mastodon. If you know anyone fluent in making and maintaining Debian packages, please share this with them. Let’s reduce the complexity of installing Mastodon on Debian-based distributions (e.g., Ubuntu) down to running a single command and watch the instance numbers shoot up! :)
Android alternatives Show more
@emergent_seas Ubuntu Phone and Firefox OS have ceased development as far as I am aware; Lineage OS and Postmarket OS are talked about often right now. Replicant is a completely free Android (but works on very few devices); Sailfish is a non-Android mobile OS that seems to have survived to some extent.
TIL: printers do microdots, barely visible yellow dots that encode the timestamp of printing and serial number of the printer. That's how Reality Winner was identified (that's a real name apparently). I'm not sure if all printers have that or only American ones or only NSA ones
I can't stress how important it is. Without #GnuPG secure communication would be extremely difficult, and journalists and their sources would be in even more danger.
@clhendricksbc I have started to use Humanities Commons (https://hcommons.org/) - it has social features, but is non-commercial and scholar-run. You even get a DOI for everything you upload. Some things are still a bit awkward to use but they are very open to constructive criticism. Once I asked for a few minor features, and they were immediately implemented.
