I've joked before about bitcoin turbonerds wanting to fuck the blockchain, but I didn't expect to get this literal

@cwebber @dthompson Hi, I'm writing a paper for a uni course on free & open source discourse communities and I was wondering if either of you would be open to doing a quick interview on the subject over email?

Decentralization is good for user control but ultimately by reimplementing existing social media platforms with decentralized protocols we are recreating the same problems that infest those networks. That's why I so rarely use Mastodon these days because "social media" as a concept is fundamentally flawed

tired: saying hi to a girl

wired: sending her ur pub key

So, here it is, my new fvwm desktop configured to appear the most CDE -like I could :flan_wink:

the greatest minds of my generation were lost to the blockchain hype train

Well, here's my Mastodon timeline, inside Emacs, on a DEC VT420.

Someday I want to either start or participate in some sort of software coop

cyberpunk on TV: "wow this is amazing"

cyberpunk in a book: "fuck yeah"

cyberpunk in an image: "nice"

cyberpunk in real life: "I'm staging an intervention for you, you drink too much, smoke too much, your apartment is a mess, you haven't been out in weeks, and why do you have all these useless broken computers?"

if php's mascot is an elephant then why is mastodon not written in php

GoLang is probably the best programming language... for backend web development of CRUD apps

I read about Risc-V initiative. Shit, I want this to replace x86 in the nearest future.
I mean, it's fully open-souce general-purpose computing architecture anyone can improve upon! Damn!

True software freedom for this age: you can get the source code of a service you use, and can set it up on your own server. You can also get all your data from the service, and migrate it to another service (hosted by you or someone else). Futher, all of this needs to be easy, fast, and cheap enough to be feasible, and there can't be "network effects" that lock you into a specific service instance.

Please don't demand content warnings from strangers. Content warnings are a sort of social contract between an author and their followers; if you are not happy with how someone chooses to use them, do not follow that person or outright mute them, or mute words.

One of the most alienating experiences on Mastodon I've observed is when someone posts about something they're passionate about or is part of their identity and the first response is "please cw that" from a complete stranger.

Your donations have a real impact on our ability to host events like the upcoming #InkscapeHackfest in Kiel. Many thanks from all of our generous contributors! inkscape.org/support-us/hackfe

seriously tho dune is probably the worst thing david lynch ever did and if they're gonna remake it they better work off jodorowsky's book or idgaf

social.coop is a a coop-run corner of the fediverse, a cooperative and transparent approach to operating a social platform. We are currently closed to new memberships while we improve our internal processes and policies, and plan to re-open to new folks when that work is complete. [9/2/2018]
