Scott Jenson

friends,

I'm following someone on Threads here in the fediverse. If I like/reply to their posts, do they see it? If not, will I someday? Curious how interoperable it is...

This just in: "Meta is connecting Threads more deeply with the fediverse - You’ll now be able to like and see replies from other platforms right inside Threads."

@scottjenson perhaps ask #infosec ? #askfedi as well? #fediadmin ? GL. Litter your post with # that people who deal in the subject may forage it up maybe able to answer you. Can you experiment with yourself?

@scottjenson

"I'm following someone on Threads here in the fediverse. If I like/reply to their posts, do they see it?"

No, they do not see your replies to Threads posts cloned onto Mastodon, and you will not see replies to their native posts on #Threads over here on #Mastodon

There is no #Federation or #Interoperabilty

Threads posts here are a mirage

Someday?

How long are you willing to wait?

And the better question might be "Why?"

@scottjenson

That's the point: there is no dynamic, two-way "interoperability"

What you see of anyone you follow from Threads over here on Mastodon is a clone, a mirage only

Again, your replies do not propagate back over to the original post on Threads; any replies to the original post on Threads do not propagate over onto the Mastodon clone you see here

(Caveat: last time I bothered to try. It's very easily proven / disproven, but I haven't bothered)

"Interoperability" or "Federation" is at most a PR play; also see: a lie

Why are Zuckerberg and Gargron lying about this?

They haven't bothered to explain

@FinchHaven two very separate issues:

1. Why would I want to talk to Threads?
Interoperability.

2. Will it happen?
I have no idea. That's why I asked.

Just because the implementation is borked doesn't mean we shouldn't try. I think, in general, connecting different platforms is a good idea. If they cheat or don't act in good faith, that's a deal breaker.

@FinchHaven @scottjenson

Unfortunately, this was anticipated. It simply does not make sense for Meta to really interoperable with the Fediverse. All that interoperability would do for them is educate their users about the superior experience of open social media. So, what they are doing is giving lip service to 'interoperability' while projecting their content here, like a continuous advertisement. If you then want to engage with them you need to get a Threads account. It's the perfect ploy.

@FinchHaven @scottjenson

That said, it's really not that big a deal. If people want to engage on Threads, they should get a Threads account. The ability to see famous accounts like President Biden over here is a benefit. It does not seem like Threads is sucking Mastodon dry or corrupting it too much. Mastodon is great at what it does and is as vital as ever, even if it is not taking over the social media world.

@scottjenson

Interesting. So, Threads users still can't see Mastodon posts. They can see replies from Mastodon to their Threads posts, but they can't reply to the reply. Still pretty short of interoperability, but certainly a step forward to have any Fedi content projected into Threads.

@scottjenson

i see when people read my threads posts. i just tried to find a notification but didn't find one.

i don't recall if they show me *who* it was, just that there was someone reading it that way.

@davew @scottjenson
Yeah, it’s basically a nebulous indicator of activity from *out there* in the Fediverse, which I think is hysterical for Threads posts that go “viral”

@scottjenson I'm not personally on Threads, but last time I checked people there got aggregate numbers. As in, "5 people liked this post from the Fediverse."

The limiting factor as I understand it would be legal uncertainty on the part of Meta whether they can really show the names and avatars of people who haven't agreed to their TOS. It's arguably implicit in the concept of ActivityPub federation that we're fine with it, but legally it's kind of a gray area.

@scottjenson My conjecture has been obsoleted by the news cycle!
