Apologies for all the #forkoff retoots.
Just found some interesting perspectives including #platformcoop from @Antanicus
Still all seems a bit like a storm in a teacup to me - but maybe I'm missing something.
I do think that the benevolent dictator model of #FLOSS / #FOSS isn't sustainable in the long term - but clearly can/does work in the short to medium term.
But either way - @Gargron should be cut a bit of slack in all of this convo and given the benefit of the doubt.
exception proves the rule? :)
Anyone know any other significant #OSS projects with the benevolent dictator model still going strong for that length of time?
Anyone know of projects that have unravelled after the steward withdraws from the project?
Mark Shuttlworth can hardly be considered a successful dictator :)

I don't agree with a lot of his choices, but Ubuntu has been around 14 years or so and still has a decent size user-base.
@bpepple @Antanicus @samtoland I use Ubuntu on everything, server and desktop...
@Gargron @samtoland @bpepple me too, I even pledged for the Ubuntu Phone. But this success has very little to do with Mr. Shuttleworth's prowess as a "dictator", but is rather proof that his vast reserve of capital managed to keep Canonical afloat long enough it could turn a profit
@Gargron @Antanicus @samtoland
I've been involved with Fedora since the beginning (fedora.us days), but I take a look at Ubuntu every few years or so to see what they're doing. In general tho, there's not a terrible amount of difference between the various Linux distros.
@samtoland @Gargron @Antanicus
How about Guido van Rossum (python), Mark Shuttleworth (ubuntu), and David Hansson (rails) just off the top of my head.
