When you're talking about Linux, it's okay to say that it's "open source".

It's okay to say that it's "free software".

It's okay to call it "GNU/Linux", "Linux", or to mess up its name.

It's okay to refer to it as "the one with the friendly penguin".

Part of RMS' legacy has been an incessant obsession with terminology and pedantry, overshadowing far more important shared objectives which are fundamentally emancipatory in nature.

Pedantry is not activism; it is alienating, not emancipatory.

The board voted unanimously to post the following statement on the FSF website: While our primary mission is freedom for software users, we want to be clear, the FSF board unanimously condemns misogyny, racism, and other bigotry as well as defamation, intimidation, and unfair attacks on free thought and speech.

25: Governance, Leadership, and Founder's Syndrome

What is governance? To what degree are leaders within a governing institution subject to its rules? We use this framework to discuss the unexpected announcement of RMS's re-appointment to the FSF board.

I just published a short blog post adding my voice to the chorus of people speaking out against Richard Stallman's return to the @fsf's board of directors.

It's short so I'll include the full text in a thread below.

Hmm, I finally read through a few more of the longer form responses to the current @fsf controversy. by is the one which aligns most closely to my current thinking. I'm not sure whether or not I'll sign the letter, but I appreciate, agree, and support what it is trying to achieve.

Mind was spinning, so I avoided some other work and put together a preliminary analysis of the petition letters regarding the controversy surrounding the @fsf PDF, data, and code can be found here:

Interesting. by suggests a logo for Free Software. It’s licensed as CC0 (No copyright) for free use. This can be used to indicate #FOSS / #FLOSS instead of using a company logo like e.g. from GitHub Inc., that may be used to _host_ free or open software but has a distinct logo of it’s own (the Octocat logo is a registered trademark).

It reminds me a lof of the Open Share and Open Source icon e.g. of the OpenWeb Icons set by and may even be a nice addition.

No LibrePlanet organizers (staff or volunteer), speakers, award winners, exhibitors, or sponsors were made aware of Richard Stallman's announcement until it was public.

Oh look, a last minute addition... I will be speaking @fsf 's virtual 2021 this Sunday, March 21st! Join the discussion of funding free software's future at 11:45a PT and get your gratis registration via
