Do other Inbox Zero people also practice Browser Tabs Zero? Or are the two not necessarily correlated?

@ntnsndr It's similar. My browser tabs "accordion" as I'm doing work. I've recently started using tab groups for tabs that are continuously open, but I feel that's an organizational structure akin to email folders.

There are some "web apps" I am using constantly - just like I have email and Slack open constantly.

@ntnsndr I do both but I’ve *never* been a browser tab hoarder. As soon as I exceed like 10 or so I close everything except my pinned tabs. It’s just how I’ve been ever since tabs were invented. If I want to save something for later, that’s what bookmarks are for!

@harris Totally. I can't tell whether I'm an incredibly neat person or I just never got over early-2000s tab practices. But when I see someone else's browser window, with 10 million tabs open, I am horrified.

@ntnsndr @harris, you would faint if you saw my system ~5 desktops 2-5 windows per desktop, 5-25 tabs per window BUT I can pretty much get to anything I'm working on immediately. I do prune tabs daily and reboot every few days to clear RAM. The main problem is that Mac OS doesn't have a neat "cascade windows" like MS Windows does. (I use Linux for servers not desktops.)

@ntnsndr @harris I recently created a matrix of projects/organizations I'm associated with and communication channels they use. When I checked all the boxes, they totaled 64.

@ntnsndr the reverse is surely a thing!

@farcaller Well *that* does not surprise me:)

@ntnsndr @farcaller Yes, it's easy to fail at both :)

I find Inbox Zero easier though because I don't mind regularly just declaring email bankruptcy, whereas I have tabs that have been open for years. In both cases the tooling we have is failing us, I would like to manage this differently but it's not obvious.

@robin @farcaller YEARS? Tabs? That is really terrifying for me to contemplate, but perhaps I just need to contemplate it more.

@ntnsndr @farcaller I mean, I don't track it accurately but I def have tabs from before leaving the NYT, so that means they're from some time in 2017-2022. Several def before 2022, too.

But hey, with a recent change of strategy I've recently brought my number of open tabs below 700 (from above 999, the counter runs out) so progress!

@robin I am proud of you. I mean I am horrified, but also proud.

@ntnsndr Hahaha, thanks Nate. I'll keep pushing towards sanity, I've heard great things about it!

@ntnsndr I use multiple tabs if the task at hand requires it, such as reading or referencing a couple of pages while writing. All tabs are closed at the end of the task, and there are never any persistent tabs.

I do make extensive use of a row of 'favorites' (bookmarks) for quick access to frequently used URLs.

@CoralineAda OMG a book! When is it coming? How is it coming?

@ntnsndr I'm hoping to have the draft complete over the next 3 months. I’m doing tons of research so it's stop-and-go with writing, but so far my thesis is holding up. :)

@CoralineAda please let me know if I can help in any way!

@ntnsndr I'd love to have you as a pre-reader if you're up for it. Let's get in touch?

@ntnsndr i use my window manager's tabs instead of browser tabs, so technically i'm always at 0 browser tabs.

@ntnsndr *Chuckles wryly in *

I am not the data point you are looking for.

@dash @ntnsndr lol. Me too. I usually declare email bankruptcy at least once a year and just archive all the unhandled stuff.

I'm at inbox zero at least once a year that way.

@dash @ntnsndr I switched to Vivaldi because of the workspaces and tab groups. I'm very very NOT tab zero. #ADHD but something resembling order.
