Crowdfunder to help a Brazilian woman continue studying for an economics masters.
.... this is basically my hope for saving humanity - getting wider perspectives involved in constructing these economic systems that determine so much.
No cheesy heart tugging music needed to get behind that!
(Also really impressed with the other students who organised to support her)
For me, it kinds of sums up the disconnect that can exist between the very well-intentioned people who a) develop software, b) deploy software to support community-building goals, and c) use that software in their communities. I'm convinced that hosting more conversations that include all three kinds of people could lead to improvements in the #UX of ethical tech, to the point where it's much better than any of the #DataFarms. That's my vision for the CTA and/or #OAE:
What a nice thing to read in a UN report:
There needs to be a shift away from economic models that value growth for growth’s sake, toward a new mindset that respects planetary boundaries, recognizes the economy as a subset of nature, and supports the concept of living in harmony with nature (reflected in SDG targets 8.4, 12.2 and 12.8, in particular)
I'll be talking about 'Cooperatively developed software tools for food saving communities" (aka Karrot) at Newspeak house in London this coming Wednesday.
6:30pm upstairs in the drawing room at the start of ration club (so you can hang out after for eating and chatting).

Here's a list of things that matter more than your ability to hold a job:
- your mental health
- your physical health
- your heart
- your kindness
- your willingness to listen to others and empathize with them
- your sense of humor (lol)
- your family, blood or chosen
- your creativity
- your morals
- you, as you are
I love working in a kind of flexible/ad-hoc way on open source projects, I would love to explore if paid projects could be delivered like this.
Instead of project timelines, estimates, roles, deliverables, etc. just start with a git repo and build up a (paid) community of contributors over time.
Deciding how to split funds is tricky, I had a few thoughts here about using a variation of score voting for it https://social.coop/@nicksellen/101031811546850939
The main contradiction of liberal democracy is that it has largely been shaped through a history of various forms of illegal civil disobedience against entrenched power structures. Such civil disobedience is retrospectively seen as justified, and the people committing it are retrospectively seen as heroes. However, each successive generation is asked to believe that any further civil disobedience would be unreasonable.
To anybody in the UK who's interested in improving the quality of #SocialCare, consider supporting Equal Care Co-op's crowdfunder campaign.
They've got a very cool multi-stakeholder #cooperative structure and are also a #PlatformCoop. @LeoSammallahti and I spent an hour yesterday talking to Emma, one of the co-founders and I was quite impressed by her radical perspectives on care work and the value of cooperatives for changing power dynamics in the sector.
Went to my first #RadicalRoutes gathering last weekend.
RR is a mutual aid network of mostly housing co-ops. The website is shitty but we're working on it: http://radicalroutes.org.uk/
It was loads of fun meeting punx from all over these isles. Co-ops are a hack of the capitalist economy and I hope more people will be able to experience living and working together in them going forwards.
Though there is a lot of discussion about finance the main benefit of the network is all the new friends made!
Hello, does anyone in #london have a working smartphone they can gift me? 📱 My s3 mini is suuuper slow 🐢 Any upgrade would be greatly appreciated! 🙏
Thanks for this review! I find that most "solutions" for the problems that plague tech start from a shallow/non-existent analysis of 21st century capitalism and are mired in liberalism that holds that the only suggestions we can entertain are the ones that ensure that nothing changes for the ruling classes. As a radical feminist techie, I think the best thing we can do is disrupt the status quo and spark imaginations...something like a techno-Situationism maybe 🤔
Having a nice time at https://www.shiftingparadigms2018.com/
Although I'm hearing much more about the problems that the solutions :/
I'd love more tech people to think about housing, and more housing people to think about tech.
To that end I've been co-organising an event with @kawaiipunk (and other people I can't @ mention).
You can come and hear me speak about https://kanthaus.online/en and other things :)
It's 7pm Wednesday November 28th at space4 in London.
Here is a nice link https://www.meetup.com/London-CoTech-Meetup/events/256342790/
If anyone needs any help onboarding onto #Scuttlebutt feel free to drop me a message!
Come play chess with me and I can introduce you to great peeps 😁
Thinking about all the surprising parts of doing software engineering work -- like the hours spent getting the friggin' build to work -- I wrote down a list of some of the Things Nobody Told Me About Being a Software Engineer: https://anaulin.org/blog/things-nobody-told-me-about-being-a-software-engineer/
social.coop is a coop-run corner of the fediverse, a cooperative and transparent approach to operating a social platform. We are currently closed to new memberships while we improve our internal processes and policies, and plan to re-open to new folks when that work is complete. [9/2/2018]
