News, Ireland, women's rights, abortion Show more
Tomorrow, Ireland has a referendum on whether to repeal their abortion ban. And Irish people from all over the world are flying #hometovote YES: https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/05/24/world/europe/ireland-abortion-voters.html
The law has led to women dying because doctors refused treatment that might harm the fetus, e.g. Savita Halappanavar (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/may/23/ireland-abortion-referendum-savita-father-galway), or having to travel to the UK, where abortion is legal.
Some good news: exit polls indicate Ireland 🇮🇪 has overwhelmingly voted to overturn their abortion ban, in place since 1983. A huge victory for women's rights. https://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/irish-times-exit-poll-projects-ireland-has-voted-by-landslide-to-repeal-eighth-amendment-1.3508861
(Side note: I am well aware women are not the only ones who get abortions. But abortions were outlawed because women get them.)
