Very nice analysis of the shortcomings of behaviour change at the level of the individual.
Better to focus on systemic failings, rather than guilt-tripping people for making a wrong choice, when it very often isn’t really a choice at all.

@neil quickly read through it. Someone else recently brought up 'practice theory' relating to food waste, seems promising. Tb you could still use an individual choice model if you factored in systematic / community impacts.

@douginamug Thanks Doug. These terms are mostly new to me, but the article resonated.
I still think individual choice is important when you have the ability to exercise it, but recognising that not everyone has the agency to make what might be the 'right' choice (whoever determines that!?) even if they want to, because the system is rigged.
@douginamug Travelling to Holland recently was maybe an example of what the article discusses. I've made a decision to not fly, but that cost me both more time and (bizarrely) more money.Which I am fortunate to be able to take a hit on right now.
Feels hard to say to someone without either of those luxuries that they had made a bad choice to fly, or that they shouldn't travel. Broken system.
That said, plenty of people *with* enough resources not to, still making bad choices!
@neil no aviation fuel duty, innit :( when UK opposition suggested it some months ago, tories banned it 'holiday tax', excellent smear tactic. Green's suggested one 'subsidised' flight per year per person, or similar, to counteract the idea that poorer people won't be able to go abroad on holiday if we go ecological.

The levying of fuel duty should be used to subsidise the cost of and improve the efficiency of alternative travel such as rail. That would be a great social practice change to allow people to just naturally fall into doing what's needed to reduce emissions.
But when you have vested interests actively pushing back against that it's all the more difficult.
