"#SocialCapital is really just the relationships and trust we have but it’s also a type of #currency that we can give and gain according to certain rules that we’ve largely intuited or aggressively been forced to learn. This social capital as currency can then aggregate around #CultsOfPersonality, creating the recipe for dominance and #coercion."

There are many celebrities who are recognized but not wealthy. Just are there remain gentry who have title but little else. I'll keep my focus on smashing capitalism and enjoy my Kardashians until the masses storm their gates.
@kavbojka If "recognition" is understood as #socialcapital, it's interesting to consider how the concentration of social and monetary capital intersect in the overall mechanics of the #capitaist system(s)... :)
@mattcropp
But isn't recognition also an important part of building trust networks?
@kavbojka @mattcropp I think of recognition not as fame or memory, but as mutual respect. The first labor contracts in the US were largely recognition clauses -- recognizing the other as an equal.
@kavbojka Social capital is a double edged sword, in that it's extremely necessary for building trust networks, but also a source of informal (and therefore often difficult to hold accountable) power that can be abused, and is also subject to scale-based concentration dynamics that echo monetary capital.
I appreciated this @rechelon birdsite thread on the topic: https://twitter.com/rechelon/status/938269402021224449
@rechelon @kavbojka Also, this essay really re-framed some experiences I had in activist communities (cw: discussion of abuse): https://emmibe.wordpress.com/2016/11/25/the-conversations-we-cant-have/
@mattcropp As a start, I recommend never following celebrities. Also I promise everyone that if you never read your idols' bios you'll be happier all around. :/
