My student Charlie Kiene spent 6mo with 2 groups of World of Warcraft raid guilds undergoing mergers. One merger led to a thriving community while the other led to complete collapse. Our new #CSCW2018 paper (with Aaron Shaw) tries to explain why. https://mako.cc/copyrighteous/why-organizational-culture-matters-for-online-groups
In my #LibrePlanet2018 keynote (https://mako.cc/copyrighteous/libreplanet-2018-keynote) I argued that online collaborative production is shifting from social to market-based arrangements. This paper explores the implications. (As is clear in the talk, part of this paper's results motivated the whole argument!)
The paper was a team effort by Max Klein, Jinhao Zhao, Jianjun Ni, Isaac Johnson, myself, and Haiyi Zhu.
My new paper tries to identify some of what is lost as market-based "sharing economy" platforms increasing replace socially-oriented systems based on actual sharing: https://mako.cc/copyrighteous/what-we-lose-when-we-move-from-social-to-market-exchange (The paper was led by @notconfusing who will present it at @CSCW next month!)
Claude Shannon created the "ultimate machine" and kept one on his desk. While I'm in his old office at CASBS, I'm doing the same! It can prompt useful thinking/conversation about AI, agency, cybernetics, homeostatis, etc. And it's super fun! https://mako.cc/copyrighteous/shannons-ghost
I continue to be blown away by the fact that I get to spend this year at CASBSS working in Claude Shannon's old study.🤩 I've written some reflections about Shannon's relationship to communication (the discipline/field) and to my own work. https://mako.cc/copyrighteous/shannons-ghost
I'll be moving to Palo Alto next week for a year-long fellowship at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford: https://mako.cc/copyrighteous/heading-to-the-bay-area
Let me know if you're around an want to connect!
Although it's never fun to hear your main professional association (ICA) tell you that "you have no friends or colleagues," being able to make one's very first submission to screenshots of despair softens the blow a little. https://mako.cc/copyrighteous/i-have-no-friends-or-colleagues https://social.coop/media/zHZl7z50XfzQhVzd4Hs
This is a great talk by @mako if you're interested in peer-production and open source.
Puzzled . . @mako makes a clear pitch on "Free software production needs free tools" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_nK6nP_RCY&feature=youtu.be
And is very clear on #commons and #P2P (though says most code comes from solo not collaboration!). Yet not a hint of coop ownership of #platforms to keep tools honest & open (GitHub!). Surely tools today become platforms? And platforms require collaboration even if code doesn't? So why doesn't #coop follow automatically, as we talk tools? How does libre not equal coop in FLOSS world?
What does the "maker" movement think of the song "Maker" by Fink? An accidental anthem or just unfortunate evidence of the semantic ambiguity around an overloaded term? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJhnbmdSy_U
This writeup of my #LibrePlanet2018 keynote on BoingBoing is more eloquent and concise than the talk. Thanks to Cory for the awesome summary, reflections, and signal boost! https://boingboing.net/2018/06/21/digital-enclosure.html
