"If nationalization of industry was based on actual popular control of industry [not state bureaucratic control] - worker and community control, with the groups federated together, that would be a very different story. It would be extending the democratic system to economic power, and unless that happens, political power is always going to remain a very limited phenomenon."

What is the connection between systemic violence and our agricultural & food systems?

For anyone in the / area who cares about healthy food, farmers markets, and , there is a great looking event coming up Oct 16-17.

Here is something of a prologue:

@care_save Welcome to social.coop, comrade! This toot's for you. 🌟 🌈 🤗

"I know now that that the overblown doom-and-gloom Wizard of Oz is just a little man trying to look big—the ego within me. And this practice is how I have become resilient.”

— from -op organizer Caroline Savery’s essay series on u-know-hoo, which I’m up late working on editing for Metapsychosis.com. Coming soon!

@Gargron @taiz Maybe the issue needs to be thought of under the heading of link previews in general? It is good for discovery to see the title at least of quoted content, if not also a preview image. Toots would just be a special case of quoted content in general. A preview--of a webpage, or of a toot--can provide important context for what I have to say about it.

Hello all!

@fabianhjr That was excellent. “Social justice, drugs, and rock & roll” sounds good to me. 😂

"Once we understand that our relationship to technology is not one of master/butler but cyborg/organ; once we understand that we extend our selves with technology and that our technology and data lie within the boundaries of the self, then we must insist that the constitutional protections of the self that we have enshrined within the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and implemented within our myriad of national laws are extended to protect the cyborg self."

"They have perfected technologies that take over intellectual processes, that render the brain redundant. Or, as the former Google and Yahoo executive Marissa Mayer once argued, “You have to make words less human and more a piece of the machine.”

No matter how you slice it, this is what looks like in the XXI century. The best part? There's still people out there who believe is the enemy of free people...

I did it. Quit Facebook. I had many personal reasons, but philosophically, what moved me was Aral Balkan’s critique based on cyborg ontology and theory of surveillance capitalism. This, combined with a vision for decentralized planetary democracy, combined also w/ @Rushkoff's point about it just not being nice to your friends to link them there (like poor hygiene, or knowingly spreading a disease) finally broke my inertia.

This article sums up the argument well: ar.al/notes/encouraging-indivi ~ @aral

@Gargron have you thought of using OpenCollective.com in addition to Patreon to support your work on Mastodon?

Nice find at the Tiny Free Library at 6th & Main in . (Note the cigarette burn on the cover; it's like found art.)

Finally finished "The New Jim Crow" (it was published in 2010); if you have not read it yet, I highly recommend it. Under the Trump/Sessions regime, all the core components of the racial caste system Michelle Alexander wrote about are being reinforced and extended.

If you've not read it yet, you may find my review/observations helpful:
