@fabianhjr That was excellent. “Social justice, drugs, and rock & roll” sounds good to me. 😂

"Once we understand that our relationship to technology is not one of master/butler but cyborg/organ; once we understand that we extend our selves with technology and that our technology and data lie within the boundaries of the self, then we must insist that the constitutional protections of the self that we have enshrined within the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and implemented within our myriad of national laws are extended to protect the cyborg self."

"They have perfected technologies that take over intellectual processes, that render the brain redundant. Or, as the former Google and Yahoo executive Marissa Mayer once argued, “You have to make words less human and more a piece of the machine.”

No matter how you slice it, this is what looks like in the XXI century. The best part? There's still people out there who believe is the enemy of free people...

I did it. Quit Facebook. I had many personal reasons, but philosophically, what moved me was Aral Balkan’s critique based on cyborg ontology and theory of surveillance capitalism. This, combined with a vision for decentralized planetary democracy, combined also w/ @Rushkoff's point about it just not being nice to your friends to link them there (like poor hygiene, or knowingly spreading a disease) finally broke my inertia.

Network scientists have discovered how social networks can create the illusion that something is common when it is actually rare technologyreview.com/s/538866/

@Gargron have you thought of using OpenCollective.com in addition to Patreon to support your work on Mastodon?

Nice find at the Tiny Free Library at 6th & Main in . (Note the cigarette burn on the cover; it's like found art.)

Finally finished "The New Jim Crow" (it was published in 2010); if you have not read it yet, I highly recommend it. Under the Trump/Sessions regime, all the core components of the racial caste system Michelle Alexander wrote about are being reinforced and extended.

If you've not read it yet, you may find my review/observations helpful:

Dear folks (especially leftist tech folks who want to stir up the tech sector and get ppl interested in , , , etc),

please remember to design for non-tech people. If your non-techy relative can't figure out how to use your thing, your thing will never get enough traction to actually change something, and it will always be the same 10 people joining every platform.

@gorenflo I honestly agonized over this decision for almost a year, until the timing this morning just suddenly felt right. I have many what I consider to be 'real friends' on Fb, and yeah there are another couple billion people on there too. But there is a time for everything...and I feel the time is coming when a few of these alternative networks will take off. What's going on here w/ Mastodon & Social.coop is a good step in the right direction.
