It's increasingly clear that the shocking opening of Kim Stanley Robinson's "Ministry for the Future" won't happen as he wrote it. The 20M-death heat wave will come, but no one will care, it will have been preceded by many 1M+ death heat waves and we'll have become desensitized. The 1K+ heat waves are already here, and floods displacing millions don't make American or European front pages.
