Almost made it to the point in the tutorial where I actually make a board and then my computer blew-up... 😭

@jjg
What do you mean by "blew-up" exactly?

Do you mean the smoke came out?

Electronics runs on smoke. You should never let the smoke out, because then it stops working.

@gemlog @ekaitz_zarraga

Not sure exactly what the cause was, but I may have uncovered a nasty bug in the way Ubuntu encrypted home directories work...🤔

@jjg @ekaitz_zarraga I've never done that. I encrypt mail and I toy with the notion of encrypting a file system.
I did do it once for someone years ago. I gave them many dire warning that it was actually secure and I wouldn't be able to recover it if they lost or forgot their passwd.
You *know* what happened.
It really complicates automated b/u's. I would like to store automated encrypted b/u's remotely somehow.

@jjg I have the same and it works for me really well... :S

@ekaitz_zarraga worked well for me too (until a couple hours ago 🤣)

@gemlog @jjg never release the magical blue smoke!! Once you release the smoke it is almost impossible to jam it back into the electronics.

@inmysocks @jjg Just the scent we know too well!
One day a few months ago I suddenly stopped typing and began sniffing the air. I followed my nose and found a small electric motor taken apart on a bench 35m or so away from my desk. It wasn't powered up. Just open and laying there and I thought I was really sensitive and went back to my computer.
A few minutes later an electrician from the other side of the building over 100 m away came through my office looking for the source of the smell!

@inmysocks @jjg I've released the smoke 3 times.
On my very first day in business machines at 17yo my boss said calmly and quietly "don't do that". He said it three or four times one after another. The smoke came out of the printing calculator...
When I was 22 I was showing off to a hotel front desk clerk how to do a reset by shorting two pins on the i/o board of the front desk m/c...
When I was 39 I was reaching up into an alarm panel buried behind some cabinets installed after. Bzzt.
