Updating KDE Neon has now killed two of my Thinkpads.
Guess this is a good time to try Solus 🤣
@jjg
Can you recommend a kde distro that is stable, debian (or ubuntu) based distro with great plasmoid updates?
@privatepenguin not sure I’m familiar with “plasmoid “.
I had good luck with Neon for the last 6 mos or so but the last update ate my machines 😂
@jjg
Plasmoid refers to their widgets. I always prefer debian but I want to be able to refer people to a complete distro with modern functionality.
@privatepenguin gotcha, I can’t keep track of all the cute names for things :)
Yeah Debian + Windowmaker were my standard for a long time but I had to switch to something Ubuntu-based for work (long boring story) so I tried Neon and it was alright.
Personally I like to have more control but for work/fam/etc. I get the need for convenience over quality 😉
@jjg
Yeah I'm a debian w/ fluxbox guy but, convenient modern functionality is this project's purpose. After this try I probably will attempt it with kubuntu.
@privatepenguin @jjg GNOME3 is currently quite good. At least once I understood hit "Meta/Windows key" and type name of app i want (or click dock) It is streamlined for common use cases. Otherwise I heard interesting things about ElementaryOS.
@alienghic @jjg
I like Gnome 2 and prefer super lightweight. The only reason I'm working on this project is to prove to family a linux distro does windows/mac better than windows/mac. The ai assistant plus seamless phone integration works best with kde widgets and, is crucial to this.
@privatepenguin @jjg FWIW GNOME3 has a mycroft extension https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1197/mycroft-assistant/ and a KDE connect one http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2017/08/kde-connect-gnome-extension
@jjg @privatepenguin And for what its worth if you want KDE to be more stable in Debian, the packaging team really could use help. This is from 2014 but I don't think its improved https://perezmeyer.blogspot.com/2014/05/call-for-help-from-kde-team.html
@alienghic @jjg
I will look into this debian project!
@alienghic @jjg
I have used these but functionality is lacking.
@privatepenguin @jjg Ah ok, KDE does tend to be better at being feature complete.
@jjg @alienghic
@kelbot
I have finished and showed my family in time for new years! Happy new years and keep on FLOSSin!
@privatepenguin @alienghic @kelbot you too brothers and sisters!
@jjg @privatepenguin @alienghic
Right back at ya!
@alienghic @privatepenguin elementary is pretty slick but in my experience it was very unstable
@jjg @alienghic
I got microphone back up with some magic, but I've not installed the widget yet (fingers crossed).
@jjg
I think when I Solus finally releases a KDE version I will give it a try.
@jjg
Let me know about the 3D printing stuff please.
I'm also looking forward to Budgie switching to qt.
@jjg
Yesterday I embarked on a project to make more useability in a linux desktop to prove to family I could have better useability than windows and mac for them. I embarked to add kde connect and mycroft. I have done this before but I wanted both the kde connect and mycroft plasmoid widgets with full functionality so I chose to use kde neon for the first time. After installing the mycroft widget my microphone broke. After a new install the microphone was still broke. -continued
