<crawls out from under rock>
What is this White Lotus thing everyone keeps talking about? Do I want to be involved?
@hollie It's been awhile but I remember enjoying it. IIRC it's kind of Black Mirror but for luxury holiday venues, exploring the eternal question "what could possibly go wrong?"
@fgbjr Oh! Interesting.
@hollie I'm binging it with my wife. We're in s2 right now. I dunno... I was expecting something more quirky, I think? It's not exactly dark, but the people aren't really having a good time. And, I'm sorry, but despite all the love Jennifer Coolidge gets for this show, her character (only one in both seasons) may be my least favorite part of the entire show.
My wife has already watched both seasons, and she heard that s3 gets a little darker and may not be my cup of tea.
@jackbrewster I did a little looking today (I didn't look before asking because I enjoy going in "cold" to other folks' impressions), and yeah, I don't think it's my jam.
I am at a place where I need more happiness from my media. Thankfully I have good books I can return to, but shows sure feel like they're generally getting darker. What little energy I have for that left I'm specifically saving for the final season of Handmaid's Tale.
@hollie Personally, I just think of it in terms of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and I think maybe we all DO want to be involved!
@aehdeschaine I dunno, I read the synopsis and I might go back under my rock
I think I've lost interest in stories about rich people - whether they're happy or suffering, it always feels like letting their world entertain me is basically supporting its existence (that's just a feeling I've had lately, it isn't a big moral soap box or anything - I'm sure I have an exception, I just can't think of one right now).
@hollie
That is EXACTLY how I've been feeling the last few years. People rave about Succession, I'm repelled by it. White Lotus? Same. Even fantasy that involves lots of rich, powerful types bickering over land? Nope. I didn't make a decision on this, I just started noticing my reactions. You are not alone!
@aehdeschaine Oh gosh, same, yes! Succession is totally repellent. I don't get the attraction at all. Just ugh, no.
This feeling has definitely grown over time, I didn't notice it years ago when I was charmed by movies with wealthy backdrops, like Sabrina or Two Weeks Notice.
But now? I can't deal with it at all. I've evolved to feel that rich people are the problem, in virtually every situation that harms humans. Watching their lives for "fun" is totally unappealing.
@aehdeschaine @hollie
SAME!!!!!
I don’t watch much as a result, bc I also really hate police, fbi, cia, and military propaganda shows. And I hate horror & violence. And now dislike most dystopias or negative future visions.
It doesn’t leave much.
I love most British comedy panel & game shows.
I like funny human stories told well.
Fleabag, Derry Girls, Chewing Gum, Ghosts, Dinosaur, Catastrophe, Colin From Accounts, Upload, Undone, Lower Decks & Strange New Worlds.
@JoBlakely @hollie I used to be pretty into procedural things like CSI (until I got really paranoid). But the more I read about how deeply the CIA/military cooperate with Hollywood for stuff, the harder it was to like. But even fantasy or historical stuff that centers just the powerful/nobles/war/monarchy just doesn't work for me anymore. Game of Thrones? No thanks
@aehdeschaine @hollie I got into the first series, finished it, but could not do the second. The first ended so disappointingly, I wasn’t going to waste my time. It was so violent, so many awful people with power. I didn’t need more of it. I used to love costume dramas…but not so much anymore either. It is all off putting these days.
@JoBlakely @aehdeschaine It's so interesting to compare notes with others about this! I used to love dystopias but now I avoid them unless I'm there for something really specific (a particular issue or performance pertinent to my interests).
I've never enjoyed cop/detective shows unless they're British (what's that about?), but I have often loved military stuff! I think because I like military history, love boats and planes, and LOVE espionage. So I've always loved spycraft and that.... -->
@JoBlakely @aehdeschaine --> gets folded into a lot of military stories. I will always watch a spy story. I didn't know that the CIA cooperated with Hollywood that much? Interesting!
I also loved Game of Thrones, but I can't watch it again, it had way too much SA. I love horror but only if it's supernatural, I can't handle the serial killer kind of stuff, or SAW (good lord no).
All the modern royalty stuff repels me, too. Have never seen The Crown, I've no sympathy for the monarchy.
@hollie @JoBlakely @aehdeschaine
Allow me to again for the eleventy-seventh time to recommend _Halt & Catch Fire_, the best show that nobody watched
Pure character driven show with none of the things that makeTV suck, and it easily passes the Bechdel test
I just finished a fifth rewatch with friends watching it for the first time. We're on the last episode and they're devastated that it's ending
@kims @JoBlakely @aehdeschaine Oooo, thank you! I need a new show! You're right, I've never heard of it. I wonder what else is hiding out there in plain sight.
@kims @hollie @JoBlakely Ooh, thank you!
@kims @hollie @aehdeschaine sounds good. Might be a while before I get a prime subscription again, but when I do, I will give it a try!
@JoBlakely @kims @aehdeschaine I don't have Prime either, but there are lots of other ways to watch on JustWatch.com! :)
@hollie @JoBlakely I used to watch spy stuff SO HARD. I still love it, but I have complicated feelings about how I respond to it now. A little bit of the underlying enthusiasm is gone (and sometimes I miss it...).
I have never been able to do horror, and I no longer wonder if I should feel ashamed by that. I'm okay being a scaredy-cat.
Funny you mention the Crown. So lauded! Such cast! But those things are never enough on their own for me these days.
@aehdeschaine @JoBlakely If you miss good spy stuff, I'd suggest going back to the older movies and leaving the newer ones. I'm kinda bored by some of the newer ones (but I love Slow Horses on Apple TV).
Oh gosh, don't feel ashamed of not liking horror! You're not alone. Also that's another good example of a genre that special effects and improved video and audio have made a little too grueling and realistic and gross.
