Folks who use watercolor and gouache I have a question - do you use different brushes for the gouache? I'm new to it and I notice it sticks much, it can be hard to get a brush clean. Curious what others do? I'm not used to washing my watercolor brushes so aggressively and wondering if they'll wear out sooner.
@hollie I have stupidly dabbled in all the paints, so I have oil brushes, watercolor brushes, and acrylic brushes. I use the acrylic brushes for gouache, since they tend to be cheaper and tougher, and I have to worry less about cleaning them gently.
IMO watercolour brushes, unless they are particularly delicate, should be good for both regular watercolour paints and gouache paints, as they are very similar and both water-based.
However, I do clean my watercolour brushes with cold/warm (not hot) water as soon as I finish. Some gentle hand soap / brush cleaner would probably help. I also keep some clean water & kitchen roll handy while I paint.
@srfirehorseart Thank you! I have some cleaner that for some reason I keep packed up with supplies, I need to move that to the sink so it's always visible. :)
You're welcome. I hope it helps.
TBH, I haven't used gouache much, so let me know how you get on.
If you add mediums to your gouache then that could be a different matter, in which case you may want separate brushes.
Good luck and please post an update!
@hollie what Jeff Dillon said. I save the nice squirrel/faux squirrel types for WC, use cheaper and tougher taklon for gouache and acrylic.
@hollie I don't work much with either, but from what I know, what Jeff said is a great advice, having more delicate ones for watercolors and tougher ones for gouache (like the ones for acrylic).
But of course, one can dilute the gouache a lot and use it almost like watercolors, in which case it would make sense to use the same brushes, I'd guess.
