#socialcoop meta
Regardless of my criticisms of certain people's behavior, folks from other instances critiquing the whole idea of #coops based on the process of defining self-governance sort of indicates that they've never tried it themselves.
It's hard to organize a group of people, because everyone thinks they can be the best #benevolentdictator possible.
#Drama is going to happen, whether you're an in-person group, a message board, or modern social media.
terfs, fascists, emotional labor
Social coop members: If you are having a hard time understanding the need to take action on the instance to limit fascists, terfs, etc.
Do not engage a trans, queer, or otherwise marginalized person asking for explanations of terminology or to defend their feelings. They do not owe you an education, and it's emotionally taxing to have to bring every well intentioned reasonable person up to speed.
Instead, DM me and I will do my best to explain it. #socialcoop
This…doesn't bode very well.
I think it is possible to turn this community around and diversify the membership—IF we are all wholeheartedly committed to social justice—not just abstractly but explicitly—pro-women of colour, pro-trans immigrants, etc. Anti-, you know, this straight/cis/white/male norm.
But I don't think it started off this way, and I don't think it is this way now. So yeah.
That's all I got for now. Must go about day. Thanks. /end
I need to dig up a poll we did a while back about values that were important to people, because the results were striking to me and have caused me unease and doubt ever since.
As I recall, "diversity" and "inclusion" were popular, but not "social justice". This is…very passive and backwards. To me it seems to indicate that people want a diverse crowd to join, without having to do anything; and if they *didn't* join, it wouldn't really matter to them.

when you overexpose night photos and you have a lot of moon light and no artificial light you get pictures which look like they are taken on a sunny day - just with stars.

I learned today that Alberta, Canada has a rat control program that's so strict that if a rat is spotted it makes the news! http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/All/agdex3441
Hey, #Keybase users: If you'd like to see Mastodon support in Keybase (which is just *perfect* in a federated network to verify people) and have a GitHub account: make sure to voice your wish, +1ing this comment on the related issue. That might make it happen!

Instead of thinking of it as "omg admins can invade my privacy"
think about it in terms of your threat model. Why is this a threat? What will result from your adversaries having this power?
Use that to shape what content you share.
Follower count shit
I saw @talialavin posting about her follower count so I checked mine and realized I follow exactly 888 people, and 878 people follow me.
If 10 more people follow me I will have 888 followers. Extremely lucky. Please boost to safe a life
