After using #Mastodon for a few years and mulling over the pros and cons of the [[quote toot]] argument... I have to say I still think pretty much the same way I did before and the anti-quote-toot camp is being overly conservative.
The same goes for the anti-algorithmic-feeds camp.
1. An algorithm is being used already, you are just using a simple (may I say perhaps suboptimal) one.
2. Algorithm choice should be part of the Fediverse experience. More choice is better here.
The same goes for the strongly-anti-crawl, anti-search camp when it comes to instances and profiles which are public. A lot of these positions feel conservative and obscurantist to me.
I recognize of course I'm privileged as I'm not strongly oppressed or persecuted like many, so I really want to keep an open mind here and engage in dialogue if you disagree. And you should be able to opt out of crawling clearly, in the same way you can add a robots.txt to a website.
@flancian as someone incredibly oppressed I completely agree with your sentiments
@flancian I agree with these sentiments. Especially with respect to search. I at least would appreciate being able to search my own toots. The lack of that really drags down the experience.
