https://scott.mn/2022/10/29/twitter_features_mastodon_is_better_without/ frames [[quote tweets]] / [[quote toots]] not existing in Mastodon as a good thing. I still believe they are truly a missing feature, should just be an instance setting for the case in which a community doesn't want them.
The ability to branch conversations into new contexts is precisely what makes quote tweets great. They are heterarchical in nature: by quote tweeting you are essentially building a different entry point into a conversation that would otherwise remain anchored to a single root.
They are also a good pattern for when you want to attach metadata to a post while boosting; I often do that by adding [[wikilinks]] or #hashtags.
@flancian My reason is slightly more selfish. Often times I want to boost something with good facts but tainted with opinions I don't agree with. Because I'm not adding anything in the boost, it is then assumed I am in the camp of the
accompanying opinion.
@flancian it would be rad to be able to turn QT off for specific posts so ppl can use their discretion around things that might get nasty.
@wetpaper hmm, that makes sense to me; Twitter has a similar feature (that one where you can disable replies by non-mutuals). You couldn't really disable people copy-and-pasting the link to the toot (as hinted by Scott), but it would serve as a nice explicit hint that that user wants to keep the discussion 'local' if preferable?
