Is using an adblocker and privacy extensions good #anticapitalist #praxis for web browsing? 🤔
@ink_slinger @fabianhjr no matter how many times i look it up, i'm not always sure what "praxis" is supposed to mean in practice distinct from "practice", but it seems like a good anticapitalist idea in action anyhow.
As I understand it, it is the intersection of theory and practice or the application of theory to effect change. Something along those lines.
So, the main difference with just saying practice is that you are linking that practice with a specific theory.
@fabianhjr @ink_slinger yeah, that makes sense. it's just one of those things that always feels a little slippery when i try to decide what exactly is meant. which is probably on me.
(i googled definitions and paulo freire came up, which reminded me of a bunch of stuff i haven't read in a long time.)
@fabianhjr @brennen That's my understanding, too. The distinction seems pretty subtle, a lot of the time, though.
@fabianhjr Yes, it's also good #security practice. All #adtech is malware.
@fabianhjr free software is anticapitalist, ad blocking is more extreme, like anarchist
@faras well, I disagree about free software being anticapitalist by the fact that free software and its development has been captured by capitalism.
Most private infrastructure run on a free software stack or were developed on free software. Eg, most servers run Linux, OpenSSL, etc. and the development of free software doesn't provide an out of the capitalist mode of production.
@fabianhjr it's a fair point, but I'm not sure your example invalidates mine. I agree that just by using the GPL you're not going to bring down the system, but sharing knowledge and removing useless intermediaries and gatekeepers we are able to collaborate more easily with important projects and carry our goals, I think that's really helpful and positive for any anti capitalist person or movement.
@faras yes, for sure. Any anticapitalist should use and support free software, I was a bit more critical the other way around so maybe I misread your previous toot.
Hopefully there is going to be explicitly anticapitalist free software and then the connection would be both ways. :3
@fabianhjr I'm not sure that anything web-based today can be 100% anti-capitalist, when there's a handful browser makers, and most likely the pages you're browsing are on Akamai, Azure, or Amazon WS.
@h no, I meant more like "if you are going to browse anyways, removing all tracking and ads would damage the commodification of your browsing time/data".
@fabianhjr I know, I mean, the difference that approach makes will probably be marginal anyway. Using the Tor Browser is probably better.
@h
Better is the ennemy if good. Adblockers and privacy extensions are good enough. Which one is the real question
@fabianhjr
@carxwol I have no idea what you're talking about. Nonsense is the enemy of my time.
@fabianhjr
@h You reply to this toot 2 hours ago. If you don't know what you were talking about 2 hours ago and become agressive. Maybe you should slow down.
@fabianhjr
@carxwol I really have no idea what you're talking about. Calm down. @fabianhjr
@fabianhjr it is excellent practice, if you ask me :)
@fabianhjr I never thought of it as praxis, but I guess it could be.
