However I'm missing some things--can you help me find them?
I want to talk more about people, working with them, their limitations and potential. I want to talk about #governance, #facilitation, #voting, #cognitivebiases and other concrete things that can be tried (and falsified) in #groups.
Let me know if you're interested, or boost if you think you have followers who are interested.
I'm an applied theoretical disease ecologist (yes, applied and theoretical - empircal is the opposite of theoretical, not applied).
I model the distributions of disease and immunity and use those models to make management recommendations.
I like thinking about economic/decision theoretic tools and their applications to public health decision making.
(maybe I should tag this #introductions )
Facebook Show more
Finally officially retired my not super actively used Facebook account. A decision ultimately as easy and permanent as switching to Linux or going veg.
Aside from all the many values-based reasons, FB is just a really bad user experience. Unpredictable post order. Annoying computer-generated "engagement" posts. Obnoxious mouseover emoji. Information hiding to push products like Messenger.
I have no utility for it anymore; friends can find me here or elsewhere. :)
I am Cassian. I am #nonbinary and toot/boost about that a bit. I'm #ActuallyAutistic and I have #EDS (#hEDS specifically), so I'm a bit interested in those things and #disability / #accessibility generally.
Mastodon is one of my autistic special interests, so I do post about it quite a lot! I'm not a coder/developer but I like to rootle around in the Github issue list and sometimes post about upcoming features I like and post tutorials for newbies.
#introductions Greetings, My name is Bill Monte. I have fled FB for something that fits my values and worldview better. I worked in higher ed but also in public schools. I teach Ancient History. My area of research is Spirituality and Education. My hope is to connect with like minded ppl. My politics are liberal and independent. No apologies for that. :)
Got my (non-NFC) #YubiKey holding GPG subkeys working with Android and K-9 mail client. First time in my life that I've used PGP encrypted mail on a smartphone. The phone part turned out surprisingly easy -- OpenKeychain is great!
Next up: trying NitroKeys (a bit more open than YubiKey, + a proper USB plug which is more convenient for GPG use).
Non-fiction varies. I'm currently reading "Love's Not Colorblind" (#polyamory) and "The Seven Habits of HIghly Effective People (#selfhelp). Previous was "Sapiens" and "Souls of Black Folk" (#race/#history).
I'm a metadata librarian (we used to be called catalogers). I'm a quasi-academic, working for university libraries in the past, but now work for a prominent think tank. I'm interested in the organization of information and how it's accessed.
Hi folks. I'm based out of Mcr, UK. I test computer security for a job, volunteer occasionally coding for OSS community projects. I'm also a parent and a born again rollerblader. Really excited about the prospect of a cooperatively owned and run social media.
After a literal day of "research", I finally gathered enough courage to sign up here and toot.
Hello! The name is Renata.
I've always struggled with pursuing my interest(s) actively because I worry too much about failing, and that includes Mastodon. It can be daunting for new users, like, I'm afraid I may quit because I don't "get" it. But I've heard a lot of good things and I want to feel at home on the internet again, so, I'm hoping to find a friendly bunch here :)
I have an uncommon physical #invisibledisability which causes chronic pain. Over time I've lost the ability to play guitar. So I started spoken word and splashing around in Logic.
Also like to paint and play Pokemon if my condition lets me.
Not sure if I have a personality outside of that, so... that's all I guess! Thanks for reading ^^
#introductions Hey guys, I just finished my Bachelor Degree in Computer Science with a focus on information security here in Germany and started to work full-time as a Deployment Guy. I am wondering if I should continue with my Masters Degree or keep working. Hopefully I will find some interesting people and conversations here :)
Hello Mastodon! I'm a techy programmer-type person hoping to help build a better world (direct democracy, solidarity economy, etc.). I also happen to live in a vehicle on wild, public lands, moving every couple weeks, foraging, practicing survival skills and helping people where we can. I know a lot about radio, solar, 12v DC power and nature/wildlife as a result. Nice to meet you all! Hope to see familiar and new faces. #introduction
#introductions Hi! I am a Romance Languages professor, specialist on 20th century French literature and philosophy, working on a book on matricide and modernism, a project on literature and tattoos, and trying to finish this semester in one piece. (Also, pretty new to mastodon, figuring it out still) #tattoos #modernism #poststructuralism
If you're into working with humans, free software & cryptography, and you love the idea of helping news organizations break their biggest stories based on submissions by whistleblowers, you may want to come work with me! New opening at Freedom of the Press Foundation just went up - boosts appreciated:
Principal Project Manager, https://freedom.press

Opinions my own :-)
social.coop is a cooperatively-run corner of the Fediverse. The instance is democratically governed by its members, who generally share an interest in the co-op model, but topics of discussion range widely.
Our instance is supported by sliding scale contributions of $1-10/mo made via Open Collective. You must have an active Open Collective account to apply for membership; you may set one up here
