App stores have a track record of acting capriciously & are also easy targets for gov't censors (including Trump). This is why alternatives like @fdroidorg are so important for user freedom.

@eloquence @fdroidorg I think these reports are actually rather from malicious users who disagree with app authors and they report the apps in the hope they get banned. We've seen this before - cancel culture, app store edition.

That seems plausible. I've also seen Google go through waves of reinterpreting its own policies, possibly as part of outsourcing policy enforcement to new teams. (I maintain a small Chrome extension so I've had to deal with a lot of that BS.)
