Is there such a think as *too much* organic matter? Our garden bed was just generic "soil" and has been pretty unproductive the last few years. I worked in compost, a layer of grass mulch, and bagged plant matter. Now it looks positively hairy!

@derek I think it depends what the stuff is doing, if it warms up and composts and bugs are eating it then great, but if it's wet and rotting or there's too much of specific chemicals that inhibit growth (like, oniony and spicy stuff is Like That as a defense mechanism etc) then it can be not great. But if you follow basic composting guidelines you should be good

@derek Nope! It breaks down fast. Keep on adding matter! ( I actually was going to the local Starbucks, which will give you their used coffee grounds, excellent amendment if you have a coffee shop nearby).

@derek It depends on the crop i think. We get killer tomatoes in our compost overloaded soil but carrots not so much.

I screen the soil every so often to sift out the dead roots etc and it also serves a nice tilling purpose. The roots go back into the compost bins to break down

The screeners are easy to make as well with just a bit of milled wood and metal screens.
