As a resident of #Connecticut I wrote my Senator, the coauthor of #kosa, about my opposition.
"Dear Senator,
I am opposed to the current KOSA bill and I ask you to not promote it further.
As part of a team that develops software and as a user of relatively small and open source social platforms, I worry that the broad language around age verification will pressure sites to practice age verification en masse as the least risky way to ensure compliance..."
"...I worry that, as the ACLU argues, the requirements of this legislation would legitimize the mass surveillance of users already undertaken by social media companies.
Most critically, I believe that the legislation will allow different state attorneys general to define what topics are appropriate for social media. Senator Blackburn was explicit that provisions in the bill will be used, for example, to target trans-related content..."
"...Apart from being morally reprehensible, I don't see how letting elected officials determine acceptable content for children is compatible with the First Amendment.
As your constituent, I do not support this legislation, and I ask you as my representative in Congress not to promote the bill further."
