On Friday, my wife pointed out that we needed a new handset for our landline. The LCD display is pretty unreadable.
I pointed out that she's the only one who ever uses it and it's costing £30/month.
The upshot? We're already using a privacy-respecting ISP* and BT only for phone calls so, after August 10th, they're taking over the line.
Makes sense, although there is a slight knock-on effect on credit scores, I hear? Ours should be good enough anyway, hopefully! 🤞
Thanks to those who responded to my request for advice when re-installing Ubuntu. In the end I removed all the 16.04 repos and those I wasn't using any more then ran: sudo apt update && apt autoremove 👍
If my boss / CEO sent an email like this I'd immediately quit anyway.
Just switched from K9 to TypeApp on Android (because I couldn't find a decent open source alternative) which prompted me to switch from Thunderbird to Mailspring on desktop.
I've now got a whole raft of Nintendo 64 games on our Nvidia Shield TV. Our seven year-old daughter is playing 'Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time' which, unsurprisingly, she loves.
Linux users! I'm considering a reinstall soon (my machine feels slower since I upgraded from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04)
Q. What do you always forget to back up before you wipe and reinstall?
(there's always *something* I forget...)
Britain's "skills shortage" is a myth.
When employers moan in the press that there aren't enough skilled workers to hire for their company, what they really mean is "we don't want to invest in training and there aren't enough people with the *exact skill set* we need to throw them into our business with no training or development whatsoever".
There is no shortage of skilled, educated, bright people in Britain. There is a shortage of bosses who will invest in staff development.
I don't know what took me so long, but this morning I grabbed a Nintendo 64 emulator from the F-Droid store for my Nvidia Shield Tablet, downloaded some ROMs and played Super Mario 64.
Fun times 😀
Apart from K9 there don't seem to be many other viable options for email clients via F-Droid.
I've been using K9 for a couple of years, and have tried to configure it every which way, but I *still* don't like it.

This looks great:
“Practical guidance for teams to thrive without a management hierarchy.
This PDF booklet is a collection of design patterns naming the most common challenges faced by self-organising teams, and practical responses you can adapt to your local context and apply immediately.
"It’s a distillation of 7 years experience, packed down into 2000 words, and offered free for you to use, share, and remix :)”
I won't be at #Open2018, now will any of our co-op.
Why? Although enjoyed meeting everyone last year, the panel session that marginalised, excluded, and patronised a female member of our co-op still hasn't been apologised for appropriately.
Said member offered to help improve inclusion and diversity this year, but there was no budget available, it seems.
Will be talking about #SocialCoop #fediverse #ActivityPub #FOSS #interoperability #cooperation #solidarityeconomy etc
Look forward to meeting many avatars in person! :)
Also gonna help facilitate an open session about the #FairCoop ecosystem.
