I'm leading a project for Moodle: moodle.com/moodlenet

We're looking at ActivityPub-based open source starting points such as Mastodon and Hubzilla.

Has anyone used the latter to do anything more than experiment? I'd appreciate your comments on good/bad/ugly! project.hubzilla.org/page/hubz

@dajbelshaw I used Hubzilla for quite a while, and although the fediverse which is based on OStatus/ActivityPub is a lot more popular I think that the Hubzilla zot protocol is a much better way to go in the longer term. In particular, zot has key based identity rather than domain based identity, which allows users to easily move from one instance to another or to run the same identity from multiple instances giving fault tolerance. That solves a bunch of problems which have been longstanding in the fediverse.

@bob That's great knowledge - thanks for sharing! Am I right in thinking that Hubzilla is in some way protocol-agnostic? How does that work?

@dajbelshaw I havn't been following it recently, but I think it also does support activitystreams/ActivityPub and the diaspora protocol which enables it to federate with those.

@bob Cheers! It sounds like you've stopped using it. May I ask why?

@dajbelshaw Really just the network effect. The fediverse is currently where most people are. I probably could go back to Hubzilla and if the federation is good enough then it shouldn't make a lot of difference.

@dajbelshaw
I'm using it regular. For the moment mainly just as a social network.
I've tested the other function, but having no need for it in my current situation.

I'd guess to hear stories from people who use it in a more advanced way then me, the 'hubzilla support' forum would be a great place to ask.

@paulfree14 Thanks, and good shout r.e. Hubzilla support forum!

I don't suppose you've come across anything that outlines the different uses of Mastodon compared with Hubzilla? The latter seems a lot more fully featured.

I'm just writing a blog post about my first impressions...

@dajbelshaw

@sean@deadsuperhero.com wrote a couple of articles about the fediverse. I'm not shure if there was an article dedicated to highlight the differences.

Reading from your first impression might be great for the devs. that are already since long involved. If you're looking at something since long, it apears to look different then to those who just take a fresh look.

(the support forum would be also great place I asume to present your ideas and research with moodlenet)
