time to run backups before I leave

"I really should set up a cron job to run these automatically. I will do that soon. For right now I will just run it manually" I said 5 years ago when I first switched my backup system over to borg

@cwebber when I was an apprentice one of my jobs was to swap backup tapes. There was supposed to be the Windows equivalent of a cron job that would run the actual backup, which was the responsibility of the network engineer.
When he quit we found out it had been failing before the backup even started literally every time it ran for over 6 months.
That was a fun couple of weeks while we figured out what the hell was going on with everything he'd been responsible for.

@cwebber I'm one step further: my backup script is named borgtest.sh, but it runs as a daily cron job.

@cwebber honestly a manual process can be perfectly fine. Automation helps in some ways but a strong manual process with little opportunity for error is categorically better than not having backups at all, and even insulates you from some classes of failure like automated job failures not caught by the monitoring subsystem. No shame!!

@eljojo oh neat I didn't know about borgmatic
