Christine Lemmer-Webber

I love cute characters and mascots for FOSS projects but why did this project choose some AI slop of a sad emaciated cat

EDIT: this is the project, it's a rust rewrite of sqlite called Limbo turso.tech/blog/introducing-li

turso.techIntroducing Limbo: A complete rewrite of SQLite in Rustwe forked SQLite with the libSQL project. What would it be like if we just rewrote it?

"what AI program do you use to make your project artwork Christine"

myself and my artist friends

What I will say is that this topic lead to a very interesting lunch conversation with @mlemweb about why this topic feels so emotional, and maybe that it would be a good @fossandcrafts topic to dive into analyzing

@cwebber Not a lawyer but, worst case scenario, you can just take a MIT-licensed icon set, pick an icon, and dress it up a bit for your logo, can't you?

@art_codesmith @cwebber there are an infinite number of less silly and harmful ways to get a logo but unfortunately the people who choose to do this are not doing so because of a lack of alternatives, they are generally True Believers

@cwebber I use the Ice Cubes client for Mastodon on my phone. I like it, except for its AI integrations.

For example, it lets you pick the program icon from about 50 different variations, all of which are painfully noticeable AI slop.

It's a fitting analogy: "he's a fire hose of generated content; hopefully one of them will be mediocre to you!"

@cwebber I guess it's a reference to the video game Limbo? Since the character is a silhouette

@kaipeacock not sure! It might be a reference in the zeitgeist the generative AI program pulled from tho at least

@cwebber using "𝕏" to refer to Twitter makes the author immediately untrustworthy imo

@cwebber how do you know with such certainty that it was generated? I could totally see it being drawn by a person

@ch0ccyra1n The commit to the repository adding it was just "add mascot" with no attribution of an artist github.com/tursodatabase/limbo

There are some weird issues with the drawing, the intersecting "crosses" on the hair where a hair is intersecting out of nowhere another hair, looks like a mistake a human wouldn't make but an AI would

It's not that it's something that was generated badly, but it feels generated carelessly, and thus hollow

GitHubLimbo mascot · tursodatabase/limbo@2ee2144Limbo is a work-in-progress, in-process OLTP database management system, compatible with SQLite. - Limbo mascot · tursodatabase/limbo@2ee2144

@cwebber @ch0ccyra1n that blog also has a lot of other ai generated header images on

@cwebber @ch0ccyra1n Yeah the lack of attribution is fair, but as someone that used to do art a lot like this, I was confused to see it called out as AI.

@cwebber @mlemweb @fossandcrafts As an artist it’s perfectly natural and desirable to get mad at people who could have afforded to pay an artist not doing that and going to the slop machine instead

@cwebber I sometimes reach the conclusion that the world just doesn't makes any sense anymore.

@cwebber Given how the company's home page doesn't really talk about much else except how well their DB is adapted for integrating with LLMs one can make a pretty educated guess about the "why" I think...
