Christine Lemmer-Webber

This is the really important one now. I probably understand ActivityPub enough now, thank you for the help. It would be really helpful to get a cross comparison with bluesky though

people are not being as helpful on bluesky

I think they don't like helping people understand protocols as much over there

thank you fediverse for accomodating my requests this will be a serious mark against bluesky if nobody helps me understand decentralized networks over there

@cwebber I would give you a comparison, but the sun has gone down, and it's dark out. I'll try again tomorrow, if the weather's good.

@Steve thank you good idea it's getting cold out

@cwebber I like blockchains, when it makes sense to use them. But... Wow! Those comments? I like the vibe on Mastodon much better.

@Xen4n thank you I will read the diagrams

@cwebber It was nice of him, but those diagram is wrong, isn’t it? Fediverse instances usually encompass the server and a web app, but it’s not always the case (i.e. GoToSocial).

@cwebber

Christine, giving you being a well known author of ActivityPub* , and having also written so in your bsky profile, the way you asked those questions, seems a bit like trolling to me.

I'm sure you can also find some quite impressive mansplaining of ActivityPub here, from people not at your expertise level.

* i can't say how much i appreciate that, thank you !

@luca as I pinned on my Bluesky profile: I have never trolled anyone

@cwebber @luca as someone who almost immediately forgets why they follow people, this has been genuinely useful :D

@cwebber ah yeah interesting. I'm confused if the website bsky.app is still the only application that will display the content?

@cwebber he also wrote react js, from what i’ve seen he seems like a good guy

@cwebber

This might help explain Bridgy Fed in a handwavy, staircase wavy, kind of way.

(I suspect Piranesi's drawings of an imaginary prison inspired the scene from the first Harry Potter film.)

@cwebber i think my explanation was comprehensive, particularly what social networks are for

@cwebber You need a ProtocolExplaining AppView for that which they haven't implemented yet.

@cwebber I think the main difference is that the fediverse is mainly techies (pardon my generalisation) while bluesky is more general public?

@credmp @cwebber I haven't visited the BlueSky, as I prefer the real one, but maybe an even broader generalization is that the fediverse is made up of people that have grown impatient trying to help people that show no desire to help themselves. Plenty of folks here are more than willing to share their knowledge, for FREE, without the need to "hit subscribe" for a back channel straw to a billionaire's coffers.

@cwebber

I mean, they also only have a 300 character space limit. It's probably not very easy to explain a protocol with that x3

@cwebber I kinda thought this was funny and educational bsky.app/profile/justingarriso.

But the vibe over there is more - STONKS! To the moon! Don't worry about Block Chain Capital! Don't worry about how we're going to fund this long term! I say AT, you say PROTO! AT! PROTO! AT! PROTO! Woooo! 🤘

Trying to peek under the covers is maybe a bit of a threat over there right now? Not sure. The tribal nature and group think of these networks is strong right now. 🤷‍♂️

Edit: this too bsky.social/about/blog/5-5-202

Bluesky Social · Justin Garrison (@justingarrison.com)This is how Bluesky works
@cwebber Mastodon is email over HTTP and JSON

BSky is Usenet over HTTP and JSON
@cwebber (this analogy doesn't quite work but it does work better than it should)

@erincandescent @cwebber uh holy crap. this is really an uncanny shortcut. you're... absolutely right?

@cwebber bluesky is how the cool kids fill up their spare 5TB hard drives
