Remembering somebody I never knew

I recently prepared for potential evacuation from my home due to nearby wildfires. I had the opportunity to consider what things I would want with me if the worst happened. One thing I grabbed was the book you see below. The name in the lower right is my grandfather's. I never knew him. He died when my mother was 14. But he was an important presence and role model in my life because my mother told me many stories. social.coop/media/shGoOnqHa57o

Remembering somebody I never knew

Nobody in my immediate family had gone to college, but I knew it was possible because he had gone. I knew learning something as difficult as engineering was possible because he had. I learned that bigotry was wrong because he had faced it and fought against it (the name on the book is the anglicized name he took when he became an adult). I learned to like poetry and art because he had enjoyed these things. I even have a painting he did.

Anyway, it's interesting how people you've never met can impact your life in important ways.

Wow. Writing this up made me emotional... I hadn't anticipated that.
