Unimportant opinion about Mastodon

Not that it matters, but I've always thought the local timeline is a useful concept. It probably makes more sense for a small, purpose built community instance of some kind with a common theme or purpose. I'd imagine it's useless for mastodon.social or the like.

I never understood the purpose of exposing people to the federation hose, and it seems like that has too many downsides.

@cstanhope I’m pretty new to mastodon also sometimes browse through federated tl to find new accounts and people. Lots of porn and hate speech though 😕

Unimportant opinion about Mastodon

@obsolete29 Yeah, I can see that. It is a tool to reach for when we want discovery, but it has those downsides. :(

Unimportant opinion about Mastodon

@cstanhope it's for people who enjoy Twitter and crave that boundless outreach and content without Twitter's algorithm or policing.

But we're ultimately trading Twitter's opinion for the moderators of our own communities aren't we? :thinkception:

Unimportant opinion about Mastodon

@trevdev Interesting. I see people mentioning "discovery" a lot with regard to the federated timeline. I hadn't thought about the possibility some might enjoy seeing all of it even if they're not really looking for new people to follow.

I'm fine with just my following list (and growing it slowly over time) and my local timeline, but I don't really have a desire to be connected to everybody at all times, nor have everybody be connected to me at all times. 😆

Unimportant opinion about Mastodon

@cstanhope I've never had a "tens of thousands of active followers online" experience myself but it seems exhausting to me.

@cstanhope you are far from alone in this

Unimportant opinion about Mastodon

@cstanhope I signed up for .xyz not knowing anything about masto. Turned out the public timeline is half French. And to danged big to be readable. And it gets me random responses that are usually negative.
Keep thinking I need to migrate.

Unimportant opinion about Mastodon

@CarlCravens It is definitely difficult to jump into something like Mastodon and end up on an appropriate instance for yourself. If you migrate, just let us know, and we'll follow you elsewhere. It's easy on my side. 😆

I had prior experience with the fediverse before joining Mastodon. So I was lucky and was able to take my time to pick an instance, and once I joined, I even had a bunch of people I knew were here that I could follow initially.
