Cool spider

At least I think it's cool. I came across this one while pulling weeds on my team's landscape day at work (the company has been running an experiment with doing our own landscaping at work). Anyway, I'm not from around these parts, so the species is unfamiliar to me. I didn't see it at first because its web was placed right in the middle of some weeds with yellow flowers I was pulling. I nearly grabbed it accidentally. Whatever it is, it seems to be a chonky, happy one.

With much help from @nev, I believe I've identified this as an argiope aurantia, or yellow garden spider.

Cool.

Cool spider

@cstanhope one of your local Argiope species, depends on what part of the world you're in

Cool spider

@nev Cool! Thanks for the lead. I'm over in the Portland, Oregon, US area. I'll see if I can figure out what it is.

Cool spider

@cstanhope there's only 1 or 2 possible species - you'd need to know what the other side looks like to confirm!

Cool spider

@nev There's two pictures, one from the top and one from underneath. It looks like it might be argiope aurantia.

Cool spider

@cstanhope oh sorry, I didn't see the second one for some reason. You're right!

Cool spider

@nev No worries. Images don't seem to federate as reliably, and then I've heard people talk about clients not doing the right thing with images. Anyway, thanks again for the lead! I'm not sure I would've found it otherwise.
