It's slightly weird that the author felt he had to include, 'Yes, it was breaking the copyright, and it was everywhere – from hobbyists to big corporations.' as a kind of a justification. In fact, there were no copyright treaties between east and west at the time, so it wasn't breaking any kind of law or agreement. But morally, I don't think it would matter under the circumstances.
