@clayton that seems huge. Has anybody done it? Any catches or kinks?

@bhaugen @clayton the biggest catch is that the collective needs to have the funds to pay for the employment - both the salary and the tax/insurance/etc obligations. It's not cheap.

If that's not a problem, I don't really see many catches other than the project will need to have a governance structure to manage the employment of those maintainers, and be able to support them professionally as well.

@clayton it's a fantastic provision and for sure will make it easier for maintainers to consider focusing on open source as a full time occupation!

We've been using their services for contracting freelancers over the last year which has been great.

Something else we're looking at is having a couple of companies pool funds into a project to hire a developer through this scheme, working 2 days a week for each company and one day a week for the community. Just working out the logistics!

@rcheesley
That is so cool. I love that companies can come together in cooperation like that. I hope it works out!

@clayton yeah there's a few logistical challenges to work with, and we need to figure out the legal agreements etc, but I'm hopeful that it will help growth of smaller agencies who can't afford or don't need a full time employee yet, while also supporting the open source community.
