"I want you to imagine someone for me. Her name is Jessica and she is 17 years old...."
For years, "A Story About Jessica" (a computer security parable @SwiftOnSecurity wrote, published on their Tumblr in 2014) was pretty hard to find.
Per the CC BY license, I've now republished it so it's easier to discover and reference.

My comments in the post include pointers to relevant work by Mark Pilgrim, @sprblm , @luis_in_brief , @jacob , and @evacide .
@brainwane Eva's toot required scrolling to read here; maybe copy the text into the post?
@pronoiac Thanks for the bug report. I'm going to leave it as is for now given that there's a hyperlink to the original as well, and since it's a pretty minor issue. But I may ask @culagovski for help improving embeds for the future.
@brainwane @sprblm @luis_in_brief @jacob @evacide Thank you. @SwiftOnSecurity is an absolute legend, for this and so much more of their work
@brainwane It is such an incredible honor to read this. Thank you. I had no idea this had percolated to so many people.
@SwiftOnSecurity @brainwane heads up, it's on @lobsters - https://botsin.space/@lobsters/112886023619309329
@brainwane idk if you would count it as such, but everytime we mention this topic, i also think of https://firesidefiction.com/carborundorum-dev-null as a prior art.
It is slightly to the side of this, and also directly in the center. If it makes sense.
And thanks. It is a good story and useful one. Also one i have used, showing it to previous partners, to explain why I am cautious giving advices, and why i recommend a password manager. Because it is too easy as a partner to install stalkerware under the guise of help
@brainwane @SwiftOnSecurity @sprblm @luis_in_brief @jacob @evacide thanks for sharing this! Having been the guy in my family/friends bubble to support with home IT issues I can totally relate!
@brainwane @SwiftOnSecurity this really puts things in perspective, wow
