"i use linux as my operating system," i state proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. he swivels around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to mansplain with extreme precision.
"actually," he says with a grin, "linux is just the kernel. you use GNU+linux."
i don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk, "i use alpine, a distro that doesn't include the GNU coreutils, or any other GNU code. it's linux, but it's not GNU+linux."

the smile quickly drops from the man's face. his body begins convulsing and he foams at the mouth as he drop to the floor with a sickly thud. as he writhes around he screams "I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!"
coolly, i reply "if windows was compiled with gcc, would that make it GNU?" i interrupt his response with "and work is being made on the kernel to make it more compiler-agnostic. even if you were correct, you won't be for long."

with a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life is ejected from his body. he lies on the floor, cold and limp. i've womansplained him to death.

Neuroscience Readies for a Showdown Over Consciousness Ideas quantamagazine.org/neuroscienc Gets at the flawed analogies for consciousness we’re being fed to describe computer models, albeit increasingly convoluted ones

I don’t know that I agree with the attribution of causes in this article but one thing is for sure: there’s been a massive increase in the levels of anxiety amongst university students, globally theguardian.com/society/2019/s

A useful reminder to myself that it’s always better to be sincere than snarky, and better to address central concerns than to try to appear knowledgeable.

I cross-posted this to :birdsite: and the responses were all “well actually, I think you’ll find that Generation X begins in 19…” rather than engaging with the substantive issue.

Thank you Mastodon for always being better than that. I appreciate it.

Carry yourself with the proud smugness of a Victorian enjoying a public holiday the rest of the country doesn’t get

I think we need a bunch of tshirts saying "How Dare You".

I've got four Mastodon accounts, but really only use this one. Since trying @sengi_app I've been surprised to compare how different the Federated timelines are for those different instances. The local timelines are obviously different.

These are four small- to medium-sized instances, and yet there doesn't seem to be as much overlap in the toots displayed as I expected. I know this is how Federation works, but seeing it side-by-side is more mafrked than I expected.

@sengi_app Really enjoying what you're doing with the app - the ability to show multiple local timelines is really valuable. Is there any documentation on the labels? I'd love to get a better understanding of what Old and other ones mean.
