@ben_hr the article didn’t say anything about the Trans-Australian Railway, that runs much further north than the Eyre Highway does and to my understanding is still very much open - and carries a lot more freight than the trucks do!

@ben_hr the majority of the non-bulk intermodal freight task on the east-west corridor is handled by rail, including a lot of cold chain loading.
