This article from someone who lived through the end of Sri Lankan civil war, comparing it to the current US situation is 💯:
"If you’re waiting for a moment where you’re like “this is it,” I’m telling you, it never comes. Nobody comes on TV and says “things are officially bad.” There’s no launch party for decay. It’s just a pileup of outrages and atrocities in between friendships and weddings and perhaps an unusual amount of alcohol."
"Collapse is just a series of ordinary days in between extraordinary bullshit, most of it happening to someone else. That’s all it is."
"As you can see, this is not a uniform experience of chaos. For some people it destroys their bodies, others their hearts, but for most people it’s just a low-level hum at the back of their minds."
@anaulin Can attest to this from Turkey. The shitshow of today brewed slowly over the last 2 decades. Everybody found something useful for themselves in it, and a critical mass of people were thus silent until it was unfavourable to them. And it wasn't even a conscious process for everyone. Life happened and you attended to it. It was "gradual, then sudden". And for some it's still gradual...
@anaulin When Trump was elected my first thought was ouch, the US got its Erdogan.
Four years later, I'll be honest, he's worse than our guy, who at least for the first few years improved a lot of things and there's a certain amount of good, whether good willed or ill, that's attributable to the governing party, like improved universal healthcare, neutralisation of military's political power, breaking certain taboos regarding the Kurdish conflict, and recovery from 2001 crisis via IMF's plan.
@anaulin Trump, tho, has been a menace to the entire world since day one in office.
He's not a smart guy but in an evil manner. He's a selfish dumbass that had a rich dad, ethnic and class privilege, and nothing else.
@anaulin I find this oddly relieving.
